Guest guest Posted July 21, 2004 Report Share Posted July 21, 2004 Below is the letter our office manager sent in - I thought it was great. , I talked with you today about McKenna going to preschool with a child with autism. My girls go to the DFW Center for Autism/Texas Star Academy and they love it. Before My oldest daughters first day last year I explained that some of her friends at school will have autism and what that meant to her. They might not be able to talk, or not understand what it means to share or not like to be touched. I also explained to her that she could really help change their life for the better by being a great friend to them. They are smart and fun and enjoy playing and singing and all the things she does, they just may not be able to express themselves the same way. She has turned out to be a GREAT peer teacher. At our school we encourage the typical kids to interact in a very natural and organic way with ALL their friends. My younger daughter turns 4 this fall and I didn't explain autism to her. She just plays with all her friends and doesn't care about any quirks any of her friends may have. Early treatment and inclusion is the key to absolute integration for children with autism. They need as much inclusion as early as possible to help them to learn how other children respond and react and to want to do the same. My kids have not suffered academically or socially either. They are on target academically (if I do say so, even a bit advanced ) Your daughter has a great opportunity to be a life changing force in someone's life, by just being herself.
