Guest guest
Do you think it is a good idea to call our home owner's insurance company and get them in to test the house? It should be covered with our insurance, I am just hesitant on getting insurance companies involved. Are there any pros or cons to going this route? Thanks, Olif
Guest guest
NO, did I tell you I thought you should not.... Once they find out or even get an idea the home has mold problems they will drop you like hot butter. I would not recomend this at all.. I know home owners facing this and my renters insurance told me where to go as soon as mold was mentioned. Just my opinion... Chris... Guest guest
Olif, Your homeowners insurance is the last ones I'd call for testing or inspection. First, they have no interest in finding a problem. Second, they have no training. Third if they know anybody that can do this you can bet it will be someone to their advantage rather than yours. Fourth, if anyone finds mold your carrier will probably insist that ALL damage is excluded because there is mold. The fact is they are still liable for the water damage (if it is a covered incident according to the contract) and only the specific acts for just the mold should be either excluded or considered part of the cap, whichever is the case. But you may have to fight for this. Fifth, even a simple inquiry without a claim can land you on the CLUE list, which both stays with the house and transfers with you if you try to buy another. http://www.choicetrust.com/ for info on C.L.U.E. (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) Report. More information is at: www.insurance.wa.gov/factsheets/factsheet_detail.asp?FctShtRcdNum=13 The best way is for you to hire a professional, credentialed, ethical specialist and pay for it yourself so the assessor's duty is to you rather than the insurance company. However, you will probably have to fight the insurance company for reimbursement. For referrals try www.iaqa.org and www.iaqcouncil.org For water damage try www.iicrc.org Carl Grimes Healthy Habitats LLC ----- > Do you think it is a good idea to call our home owner's insurance > company and get them in to test the house? Guest guest
Thanks Carl and Chris. I had a suspicion that I didn't want to contact my insurance company. A friend of mine was advising me to, so I thought I would check with you guys. I am glad I did! Thanks, Olif
