Guest guest Posted July 29, 2004 Report Share Posted July 29, 2004 My son is zoned for FBISD also and when he turned five this past March and therefore became eligible for full-time enrollment this coming fall, he no longer could do dual enrollment. The district still offered speech therapy but it is limited to 12 sessions per school year and at a different campus other than his zoned elementary school down the street, so I said, " forgetabout it. " The speech therapist he had at elementary school didn't have her masters degree so she wasn't even certified, although to her defense, she was actively pursuing her masters. In the 16 months my son was treated by her, in my opinion, no progress was made, even though her " charting tool " showed progress was being made. My son was speaking in 3 and 4 words sentences. So at the end of March I enrolled him at a private school specializing in educating children with PDD, Autism and Asperger's and after about 6 weeks there he was speaking in 6 to 8 word sentences and now after 4 months there he is speaking in 10 plus words--mind you he still talks like a foreigner learning english but he is clearing making real tangible progress. Now, a child may be dual enrolled up to the age of 5 I believe, but NOT after. The change in the rules just went into affect last month. Guest guest Posted July 29, 2004 Report Share Posted July 29, 2004 We had my son in a dual enrollment situation when he was in 3rd grade (8 years old...he is now 12). He was attending a private therapeutic school during the day but receiving speech, OT, and in- home training and parent training (well, he wasn't but I was ) from the school district. We had no problems then at all. However, when it came time to enroll him the following school year, dual enrollment had been phased out for older students. The district DID offer to continue his dual enrollment (the ARD committee did....they didn't HAVE to, but they CHOSE to) but they were no longer required to offer dual enrollment to older students after that time. That was 3 years ago. I was thinking (and this could be wrong) that the dual enrollment elimination in the Commissioners Rules was a phase in thing....eventually stretching to all students, but starting first with those above the PPCD level. Of course, this rule is only whether they are REQUIRED to offer it as an option. The ARD committee can decide to do whatever they want whether it is in the rules or not. The REQUIREMENT has been removed but the ARD Committee can offer more than required. We too had our son dually enrolled. He attended the local PPCD briefly at age 3. We pulled him and put him in a regular pre-school. He made a lot more progress that way. The PPCD was all non-verbal, but we pulled him because of lack of staff watching the kids. I continued to take him to speech and OT until he was eligible for regular Kindergarten in 1999.
