How to carry a scoby on an airplane?

My friend is here from out of town and wants to take a scoby with her back home.

She is coming over the day before her plane leaves.

How should I package the scoby? Am I right, you can't carry liquids on planes? I

think I would just put a scoby in a zip-lock plastic bag. Should she keep it in

the refrigerator overnight until she leaves for the airport?

What should she do with the scoby when she gets home, if she is not making

kombucha immediately? How long can she wait after she gets home to make

kombucha?

Thank you,

Tamara

I would probably carry the scoby in a zip lock bag without fluid. I think the

scoby could take it for a few hours. Then place it in kombucha when I get home.

You think that would work?

Of course, they x-ray everything at the airport, I guess that won't hurt the

scoby too badly.

A few years ago (during the time of increased security checks) I never

had a problem taking scobys in a pressure proof wider necked bottle, like

the Lucozade bottles we get in the UK (America?) topped up with

acidic KT. I ten flew from UK to mainland Europe. The Kombucha went in the

check in-luggage, never leaked, and went on to make great Kombucha abroad.

I always prefer bottle over ziplock bags; even use that method mailing

Kobucha out - even from Uk to US - So far never a problem!

Blessings,

Margret:-)

Tamara,

It would probably be best if your friend does not try to carry the scoby

through security check. I'm pretty certain they will stop her and not let

her take it on board the plane. Packing it into the suitcase would give a

better chance of success.
