Guest guest
Everyone on this list needs to submit a public comment via the website that has provided the link for. They SHOULD be deluged with comments from the autism community. This is a chance for EVERYONE to participate by sending in comments. I posted the below comments on the site: " Now that autism spectrum disorders occur in 1 of every 166 children (per CDC), DADS needs to create a portion of the department that is specifically geared toward serving individuals with autism spectrum disorders, with or without comorbid mental retardation. Almost half of individuals with autism DO NOT have MR...yet currently Texas has NO services for these individuals who are just as disabled by their autism (probably more so) than individuals with mild mental retardation. There are currently no Medicaid waiver programs that meet the needs of this population, either. Soon, they will be the MAJORITY of disabled persons in Texas, since in Texas over the last 10 years the population of individuals with autism has grown 475% compared to about 29% for all other disabilities COMBINED. DADS needs a separate division that will meet the unique needs of all individuals along the autism spectrum. Texas also needs to develop a specific waiver program that fits the needs of individuals on the autism spectrum. What works for people with MR or cerebral palsy does NOT necessarily work for people with autism. Autism is more complex than other disabilities. Guest guest
My child has HCS and refuses to go to Day Hab because of the way that they treat him. It is the same that he was treated in school and he doesn't go there either. Throw a tatrum and receive positive reinforcement. We really do need a program just for our kids and adults. He is twelve today and has let me know in more ways that one that he shouldn't have to work.
