Guest guest
Send them copies of everything you have listing his diagnosis. I applied for n's SSI I did it on line. You have to print out the Authorization to Release Information forms and send them in. When I mail them in I sen copies of all of ns records. I mailed the package "Return Receipt Requested" this way I had proof they received the packaged and the date they received it. The Social Security Adminstration did a phone interview with me and n's SSI was approved in less than six weeks. Guest guest
We were approved for two kids. Our 3 yr old son is autistic and non-verbal. He doesn't get much but it's better than nothing. He also gets Medicaid because of the SSI. Since he is just 3 yr old and has the Medicaid, he can also get on WIC. We have 5 kids so every single penny counts. Lol. My 13 yr old was also approved. He has Asperger's, adhd, and anxiety. Now younger one was approved after a couple of months. The older one took a couple months longer. The Medicaid really comes in handy with the 13 yr old because he's on 5 different meds right now. Now this month we don't get anything because of a 3 paycheck month. That will put us over on income. But its starts back up next month. Guest guest
In Kansas, you income is based with parents only until after one month that they turn l8 years old. The process once applying for it took three months to receive first check just to let you know. It is painstaking but worth it for an income for our son. He is l9 years old now. Hope this helps. Guest guest
He never received SSI under age of l8 because it is due to parents income, but once they turn l8, in the state of Kansas anyway you can apply for him, as his guardian, for SSI, and I would imagine it would be more than what you could receive if he was under l8 and getting ssi, but like I said I never could file that. He did receive Medicaid insurance as asecondary insurance under age l8, though. those are differant services. Guest guest
I have SSI for both my children. I applied at S.S.A. or online at ssa.gov. If you have enough medical records like I did my child started getting SSI the next month and then full benfits there after. But here is the key to where I got mine so easy. 1. My daughter is 24-7 total care. She is 5 yrs old. Can't talk still in diapers and can't feed herself. The key to SSI or disabiled is they can't function. As mine can't she has been in therpy since she was 3 and it has gotten to the point that the speech and ocpucational has said to me she will never function in a real world. But if you have all the medical records on hand it should not be to hard. If they deny you go back and do it again. Keep appeling there denies and they will see the truth. But you can get started online at ssa.gov. Good Luck to you. Re: SSI for Autistic child for adult or child? did you use a lawyer? Guest guest
that makes total sense- I was thinking high functioning / aspergers - I am told by SSI attorneys if your child is in a mainstream class, they almost always deny unless repeatedly hospitalized or have a concurrent physical disability. I am looing for help to make sure I document everythign as accurately as possible to help our chances, but soetimes I fear I am not wording things in the best manner - I took photos of all the things in my house destroyed hoping to have in case we have to appeal but there is no place to include int he initial application, or that I found anyways. thanks for your candid reply - that really makes very much sense to me.>He never received SSI under age of l8 because it is due to parents income, but once they turn l8, in the state of Kansas anyway you can apply for him, as his guardian, for SSI, and I would imagine it would be more than what you could receive if he was under l8 and getting ssi, but like I said I never could file that. Guest guest
I would recommend going into the office and talking to them and they will assign you a counselor to meet with you over time. They are very helpful and friendly there and the counselor will give you the right paperwork and take it from you and tell you what to do next.. Like I was very surprised when a nice man from SS called me to tell me my son and I would get benefits after my ex husband had died. Mine was called, " Divorced Widowed Spouse With Dependant Child in Care " and it would come from all my ex husband's years of hard work and paying taxes. He had to be on disability for two years before we would get it and he was barely so when he died I began to get his amount and it was pretty high and they stopped my son's SSI and started giving him this which was much higher than his SSI. He began to get it when he was quite young, about $200 Supplemental Security Income. They don't expect it to be a person's total income. He lived at home with us and my husband worked full time and earned a good income. They didn't ask about the income of the parents, were only interested in the child's disability, like he had to get it before a certain age and his was age 2. It increased a little bit in cost of living allowances each year to about $250 and I began to use it to pay one of my other sons to take care of his brother while I attended college and got two degrees, my bachelors and my masters. Later on after my divorce it was all I had to live on while my disabled son still lived with me, my other three children had left home already, so I rented out rooms to college students to make the house payment. But it wasn't enough so I went to our local county Developmental Disability Services and told them my situation, that it didn't look like I was going to be able to take care of my disabled son at home anymore unless I got help so they assessed his care needs and paid me a flat fee for awhile, called " Relative Home " about $1,200 a month. But then they got a new program because some disabled people sued the state of Oregon, so now I get over $3,000 a month to take care of my son at home....in addition to both our Social Security checks. It is based on his care needs, such as he has a food tube, etc., so they go by what it would cost them to put him in another living situation..and it would not be cheap for the state, probably twice as much at least, and he would not get as good of care as I give to him. One reason they only pay me for 256 hours a month. I have to fax a time sheet each month. If others cared for him it would be 24/7 hours around 720 hours a month to pay a nursing home. Sooo on this program Marty is my " employer " and I am his " employee. " Actually I am BOTH and it drives me a little nuts at times making out the paper work as I am his full legal guardian and make all his decisions for him, even life and death ones, yet he is my employer. Sometimes the government can be a little nuts but it is worth it... I would agree with the person who said to get started, then appeal, appeal, and appeal some more. Appeal till something happens. This is our right as Americans. This is why immigrants legal and illegal are flocking to America, to get the benefits of living here! Just some things to motivate you all to press on. But my son is 46 years old and this didn't happen overnight, nothing happens overnight but requires perseverance. Keep trying! But just by a couple of months. I applied for Coty in March and he was approved by June I believe.  From: Autism and Aspergers Treatment [mailto:Autism and Aspergers Treatment ] On Behalf Of Amy Spikings Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 2010 8:26 PM Autism and Aspergers Treatment Subject: Re: SSI for Autistic child   how do you start this process? My daughters dx is aspergers, adhd and anxiety. Guest guest
KIm,Yes, it will effect your tax returns and this is why - everything you make or receive is considered a resource. When you get your tax return you must SPEND it ALL within 30 days and then show proof where you spent it =- and it can't be vacation or anything like that. For years we received SSI for my daughter and I fully disclosed all of our information- I am now in the hole with SSI for $10,000 because my husbands life insurance policy had a cash surrender value of 1500. They considered that a resource EVERY MONTH (Even though if I cashed it in I could only SPEND it one time) and they went back 4 years and totalled what they paid out. Anyway, there are a few other things, like I get paid the last day of every month - and SSI uses your bank statement as of the first of every month, so if you have $$$ in your account, they hold that against you. It was quite the headache! God luck.Suzanne--- wildirishrose5972@... wrote:From: Kim Mader <wildirishrose5972@...>Autism and Aspergers Treatment Subject: RE: SSI for Autistic childDate: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 07:25:20 -0700 (PDT) I have a question about ssi for an autistic child. So it may be worth a shot to try, especially if you live in a one parent household or where one person works. My husband and I both work fulltime so we were counted out!!
