Guest guest
I agree with about "trusting" the school system to DX your grandson. I would try to find developmental ped. in your area for a DX you could trust. Just my thoughts. I know of parents in our school district that made a huge mistake in "trusting" the system. There is a lot of help available now. I advise to contact a local autism support group. At least you may meet others who are pleased with the doctors in your area. Good luck! Guest guest
Figuring out if he is on the spectrum is important although I don't know that I would rely on the school to do that. He can get help and services. If he is on the spectrum, ADHD or just "not right" there are things you can do to help him and recover him. I am recovering my 4 yr. old ASD son now. So many fall through the cracks and don't get the help they need. My own husband was one of those. We are just now figuring out that he is Asperger's because of our son. Better to figure it out as a child and get some ABA help as well as diet or biomedical help. GrayFrom: Carolyn <charper777@...>Autism and Aspergers Treatment Sent: Mon, February 7, 2011 6:31:54 PMSubject: They are going to test my grandson at school Hello everybody, well they are going to test my 6 year old grandson Lucas at school for "the spectrum" the school psychologist said today. She called me rather than his mom, don't know why since I am the emergency number. Anyway it all began when he was sent to the principals office on Friday for telling he hated his teacher and his mother and father hated her too! Well come to find out from his mom this was a line he has recently learned in a movie. He tends to repeat lines he hears out of movies just out of the blue like that..it was the end of the day on a Friday and he was tired and frustrated and wanted to go home. One thing he holds his pee all day and won't eat anything for lunch usually. He has been known to say other inappropriate things like he wants to blow up the school and kill everybody in it, again out of a movie.. Yet the other day her wrote down the names of all the kids in his class for and spelled them perfectly, has loved letters words and for a long time, but his teacher is worried he is not doing the math and may not get passed on to 2nd grade next year. Yet he can write his numbers to 100, just does not want to add or subtract them at the moment. Yet he can spell Elijah, , , etc. all in a list by himself so neat it looks like the came out of a word processor without any mistakes. I studied cat and dog in first grade do not remember doing math yet for quite awhile. Both my daughter and I are worried they will want to label him but the school psychologist said "special ed" is much different now and yet just hearing the word has made us cringe! Isn't special ed a label, heeeelp! I also have a son Marty, my daughter's brother and Lucas's uncle who has been severally autistic all his life and could not bend to the system to educate him when he was younger, just could not hack the stimulation of public school, etc. but back then they didn't know very much, and we are hoping the know more now... If a smaller math class will help him to learn math so he won't be held back that will be good. When he was in preschool a few years ago his teacher wanted him tested then because he did not speak up like the normal children did but he seems to have outgrown all that now and speaks really well perfect dictation and detail into all sorts of things. The psychologist says the testing starts with her observing him in class and also my daughter observing him at home and keeping records, not sure what else but will let you know.. Guest guest
Carolyn You've survived all the things that have happend over the years with your son, and now your grandson being tested makes you want to hide under the covers? Don't you think it's a bit too late to start doing that now? Humans are funny creatures, aren't we? I'm sure you will get through it fine. After all, what other choice do we have? Guest guest
Thanks for the input . I am just so suspicious of the school system, have had a lot of unpleasant experiences over many years with my son. Anyway he does have a really nice 1st grade teacher who has a Downs Syndrome child and is very supportive of kids with disabilities, etc. so that is good for now at least. Then the psychologist saying they didn't want to label him and then calling it " special ed.. " Also I am kind of skeptical about them testing him for " the spectrum " like she said, it is like she has preconceived ideas already and then will just be looking for things that fit.. I don't know how else they could do it but this worries me, maybe test ALL the kids equally in some way as to identify certain characteristics instead of looking for a specific thiiiing this way? I am kind of wondering too why they don't test him to see if he is genius material and promoting that in him. For example he likes to go to the computer and use the word processor to write a page of letters. He always starts it out the same and ends with War of the Worlds! a favorite movie of his. Then he speaks in a play mic and rambles on in great detail of long story of events like he is doing the news. One day I asked his mom to compare pages to see if they were alike, wouldn't that be amazing? I saw a movie not long ago where a little girl wrote pages and pages of of what looked like random letters and numbers and later some scientist stumbled across them and figured out they were a code that told of future of calamities. It was gift from aliens or something! I know that is weird, but I do think my grandson goes to the beat of a different drummer and it may not be a bad thing at all. He always surprises me by what he says he is so mature sometimes, not little kiddy like, really surprises me sometimes. But he can be just a little goofy kid screaming and laughing and wrestling with his brother on the floor too. I kind of look at all my kids and grandkids as geniuses in their own way they are all so different and unique and amazing. I just don't want them trying to force him into a cookie cutter.. Guest guest
Your right , just have a lot going on right now I guess, we knew this day would come as he has always been a very quirky child. Denial can only take a person so far I guess. And sometimes I get the odd notion that I have gone through ENOUGH already!! No more!! I don't seem to get my way much at all, but I think it is human nature anyway to want things to let up. At any rate I know God's grace is sufficient, He is what has gotten me through so far. I know that but just do not want anymore testing to prove that, but then this will be more my daughter getting tested huh, am just so close to her and my grandkids and want to rescue them from being tested at all.. But I can't even rescue me, recently had an ultrasound showing a blocked carotid artery, then went to church had prayer and had a CT angiography and showed NO blockage, and am currently trying to get some input about the ultrasound. My doctor said today oh they were just sound waves but have been Googleing the test and found it quite reliable, am not going to say God gave me a miracle until I visit my vascular surgeon in a couple of weeks to have him tell me what happened to that plaque in my artery, was it there or not, and if it was where did it go? Also had to take Marty to ER he had a light case of pneumonia in each lung and went on 5 days of Zithromax and seems fine now, but that last day had two bad seizures so we took him back to ER they said his lungs were fine though, don't know why he had two seizures but none since. Life goes on! Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, little Lucas reminds me of my son when he was that age! In grade 2, he told the grade one teacher he wanted to kill her!! That ended with a trip to the principal's office where it was explained to him how bad it is to threaten someone! He thought it was odd that they thought he would really follow through with killing her. He told me he wouldn't even know how to do that because he was little and she was big! But he was very frustrated and didn't know what else to do or say! And being labeled isn't always a bad thing. Once was diagnosed with aspergers, it opened up a lot of helps for him and he has continued in the same public school since he was diagnosed in grade 2 - and he's now almost done grade 8. Not saying it's been perfect, but I really can't complain because the staff always seems to be looking out for his best interests. I feel very fortunate that both our principal and vice principal have degrees in special education. They deal with whatever is happening at the time and are very receptive any time I talk to them. They keep in touch with me all the time to let me know what's happening at the school and I am always welcome to call, email or visit the school any time something comes up. He's in a regular classroom all day with one exception. He stopped taking French in grade 5 and instead has a tutorial class with the vice principal who makes sure he is keeping up with his school work. She also helps him with organization skills and this year she is helping with the transition to high school that happens in the Fall. I know we are very lucky to have at such a wonderful school! Reading this forum, I can see that this is not often the case! Whatever the diagnosis, Carolyn, you know he will always be the same Lucas no matter what kind of label he gets!!! And he's got an awesome Grandma - so he's sure to be okay!! Guest guest
I know it's hard to swallow - words (lables) like " the spectrum ", "autism", "special ed" but the truth is - if it's the truth and he is found to be on the spectrum than those labels will actaully help protect him and allow him the services he will need. The schools cannot diagnose however without an outside/private diagnosis they can state on the paperwork "Autistic like" and same with a private diagnosis, if they can't quite determine if he is Asperger's or Austitic the will diagnose with Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). Our label is new, we're still adjusting to it but we've had similar situations like you described - without his Austism label - it's possible with all this zero tolerance bull..... that he would be suspended from school or even expelled but that little label can allow you the chance to fight it and prove that it was a "manisfestation of his disorder". So many of their behaviors are indeed that! Hopefully the school is just trying to help. But if you disagree and don't believe he is on the spectrum at all - you should get your own evaluation it will be much more detailed than a school's but a school has to defer to a real MD's eval. (I think) Hang in there- it will be okay! Guest guest
Hi , I want to thank you and the others who wrote giving me encouragement about my grandson. He goes to a pretty good little school where the people are generally very supportive and you are right it would be good for people to understand that what he says is not reality, to him he is being dramatic for emphasis and it is not a real threat he has thought out to actually do to you. Mostly he is a very thoughtful and introspective little guy but when he doesn't get exactly what he wants when he wants it he can sometimes become dramatic like that and say he wants to kill you, but on the other hand he can wait all day just to pee. He won't go at school because he is afraid of the toilets there and has explained to me why, they have strange tanks.. Since he was little he has loved unusual things, for example was totally in love with evergreen trees for a long time and always wanted to go up and touch them and would beg me to bring them home, like I could dig up a ten foot tree and take it home. When we'd go to Goodwill around Christmas time he would spot a small tree and carry it all around the store, and many times I would buy it for him to take home. Also he has always loved telephone poles and the gizmos on top of them, he calls them " hairclips " and knows them all by heart on the streets in his neighborhood. The other day he was so excited to tell me, " Grandma Grandma they put up a new hair clip on the pole in front of our house! " and I looked and sure enough they had. Not many kids notice such things. Oh yes and another thing his mom cannot throw away his toys, when he gets tired of them she puts them in the garage in boxes and when he wants something out of the blue one day he goes out and searches for it, at times she has called me to search for a certain toy, it is very specific, yet he hasn't played with the toy in months. Oh and his eating, he does not like many foods. I've worried his growth will be stunted but he is the second to the biggest kid in his class, is tall and quite big for 6. For Christmas I bought him a little portable DVD player for his movies and he just loves it. He loves grownup movies and little kid movies alike and memorizes them word for word. His mom is also a movie nut, she will watch them over several times and memorize them. So guess it runs in the family. When he was little he loved stop signs and other traffic signs and I actually found a stop sign for him and bought it and he was in love with it for a long time, even slept with it. He is a precious little boy and very handsome, has blond hair and blue eyes. The other day at church he had gone up to children's church and all of a sudden there he was back down holding his hand out to me, he had a hang nail. I was soooo glad I had put a nail clipper in my purse for him, learned from the last time he cried for hours with a hang nail and I couldn't clip it for him. He was really miserable. Currently I have been trying to teach him to ride a bike but he is not much interested, told me, " Grandma can't I just ride in the trailer like last year? " I said I don't know you weigh almost 70 lb. now and your head sticks out the top... Probably have to pull him a few more times...good work out for me! Guest guest
Thankyou that was very helpful about the schools not being authorized to make a diagnosis.. And that is true about the no tolerance policies, my daughter did tell me the other day that when he was saying he hated his teacher and his mom and dad hated her too he held his finger like he was shooting a gun. I have never seen him do that and wonder if it isn't an overreaction like the story on here recently where a little boy pulled his pants down and was fondling himself in front of others.. People get too carried away in their observations I think and read a lot into it that is not there. But it would be good to not get suspended for such things. Now he has started the evaluation process so perhaps it will help. His teacher did say on Mon. that one of the reasons she sent him to the principals office on Fri was because he wanted to go so bad that she thought walking down the hall to his office which is next to the front entrance would give him something to do. The principal however when he called my daughter went a little overboard about what he had done, told her he'd said the F word, and come to find out it was the lighter version from the teacher, not the UK one, but the IKing one..yet the principal said it was the UK one...sigh. Guest guest
: ) The story about the little boy suspended or pulling his pants downs was from me - it happened to my son, Luke. We have to schedule a meeting with the District Superintendant to request it be removed from his record. If it is not removed it will be on his record until he graduates high school. The report doesn't even state his age or grade - it's awful the things that the report says and do you know, not one adult witnessed it. It was 4 kids that told the teacher. The teacher interrogated my son and got him to admit it. I'm sure it really did happen, but come on - these public schools ... you really have to protect your child - especially if they are on the spectrum. One day I googled " 6 yr old suspended from school " and almost every story I read was about a misunterstanding - usually from a child on the spectrum. There was a boy suspended for pointing his finger like a gun. There was a boy suspended for saying he wanted to kill everyone in the school. There was a boy suspended for EXTORTION because he asked another boy for money and the boy went home and told his mother - I have to give ___ $10.00 or else he said he would beat me up.... the list goes on. Don't mean to scare you , only to prove my point. IT sounds like he's at a good school with people who really want to help so... let them help. It might not always be the case. The school can change principals or whatever. Your grandson's behavior could get worse without intervention. You could find yourselves at another school for some reason - who knows! So be pro active and get the IEP in place. It really can't hurt (if he infact has a disorder) : ) Best of luck to you. Please keep us informed of what's happening. We JUST got done with our evaluations and 3 IEP meetings. It's official as of today, the services started. * They are going to test my grandson >> at school >> >> Hello everybody, well they are going to test my 6 year old grandson >> Lucas at school for " the spectrum " the school psychologist said >> today. >> She called me rather than his mom, don't know why since I am the >> emergency number. Guest guest
It's a pity we've become so strange about so many things these days. When I was at school - back in the 60's at a small country school - the teacher probably would have just told him to find a large bush and go behind it. Then there is no need to flush. These days you can get into legal trouble for letting your 3yo pee in the gutter. I still don't know how that can be classified as 'indecent exposure'. Guest guest
Hello, I didn't see your name anywhere but do remember the story about your son Luke. Wow, you need to go and see the superintendent and get that stupid report removed then, glad you can do that. Funny they wouldn't state his grade or age, that is weird, why state anything then? And taking the word of four other kids that is weird too, maybe only one actually saw him and the others chimed in. When you googled 6 year olds being suspended, that one sounds like my grandson wanting to kill everyone in the school. He was using that word kill quite a bit for awhile but has toned it down at my insistence. I think it is a good sign he can be taught that some words you just shouldn't say! Oh believe me I am scared of the schools, they are more like jails with guards, they look at kids like that are bad little prisoners. It is more the authoritarian system. I don't look at kids that way, never did. I treat them like they are good and smart and valuable, not like they have to measure up to my arbitrary standards. I want each kid to reach his own full potential by whatever means he or she can learn, not just one way the only way. My grandson and his brother have a pretty good school now but we have just learned the district is shutting down 4 elementary schools next year and one middle school, and they are going to put the 4 elementary schools all together in the one larger middle school. It is to save money. It is a mess and a lot of parents are against it, for one two of the elementary schools are quite a ways out in rural areas and the kids will have to be bused long distances, probably one of the reasons people moved out there was so their kids could go to the smaller school. With us it has been really convenient in that the sister goes to the middle school next door and the two brothers can meet her after school and walk home. Now the older boy will go to the middle school next year and the little guy will be clear across town on his own. Guess his mom will take him and pick him up. They don't even have a playground there so guess they will have to build one..and there is going to be a lot more kids playing, etc..teachers, lunch schedules, what a mess to save money and it I am skeptical about that too, why not fire a few administrators instead? Oh well. Guest guest
This is actually how my daughter was diagnosed as well, and it was done very well every step of the way. The school was the first one who looked at her and brought Asperger's Syndrome up, though her school has a lot of experience with kids on the spectrum. They even have a full time teacher on staff certified to work with ASD children. Gillian was observed, tested, her teacher last year and this year both filled out lots of observation paper work, we filled out a lot of paper work, she saw a physical therapist, speech therapist, psychiatrist, counselor, and more. The school did all of the testing for free for us, where as when we tried doing it privately at the same time, we were looking at a minimum bill of $2k from a local child psychiatrist for a 3 hour observation. Definitely do not discount the school from being able to handle the diagnosis. The only issues you may at some point run into is whether or not your insurance will accept it as a medical diagnosis. Our doctor accepted the diagnosis and paperwork the school provided, but we've never sought outside help of any sort so I'm not sure what, if anything, insurance would handle. > > Figuring out if he is on the spectrum is important although I don't know that I > would rely on the school to do that.
