Guest guest
I am in Dallas, TX. My son Milo is 12 and has Aspergers and Mood Disorder NOS (aka not quite bipolar). I am facing the teen years with a great deal of anxiety. Although he is doing ok on trileptal and a low dose of risperdone, he is starting to become non-compliant with his medication, leading to regressions and side effects from the seizure medication. He has an older sister who is quite sensitive, both to his problems and to his antagonistic modalities. This leads to jealousy and sibling fights, and without his best behavior on, he gets somewhat violent. And this is at 80 lbs. I don't know what I'm going to do with a 140 lb teenager who is melting down! His IQ is pretty high, though low in fluid reasoning and executive function, and he does ok in school academically when he is not having disruptive behaviors. He has speech therapy and writing and testing accommodations through the school district and thank goodness no problems with the school system since 3rd grade. I am so glad to see some activity here. If anyone else is in the DFW area and knows of tween & teen groups for Aspergers/HFA kids (particularly in the southern sector! it's over 30 miles to the closest one I've found!) I would be thrilled to find out about them. Socially Milo has one good friend (who happens to be severely ADD) in his class and plays with the neighbor children, who are typically 3-4 years younger than him, and this works well. His cousin, 9 months younger, also has Aspergers and they get along famously; he has asked about meeting more kids that are 'like' himself and I feel bad that I haven't found a group we can squeeze into our schedule. Well I guess I should get back to work, but I wanted to join in the chatter for a few minutes. Looking forward to shared support...
