Dear ,

Some doctors give erythromycin to pregnant women - it doesn't cross the

placenta to the baby. Minocycline and doxycycline do cross the placenta to

the baby and that's why they're not used during pregnancy.

Others have found that they go into remission while pregnant so prefer not

to take anything. Dr. Brown used to withhold anti-inflammatories during the

pregnancy and then give them right after delivery to avoid the flare which

often happens at that time.

Perhaps talk to your doctor about this?

Chris.

I just found out that I am pregnant. I've been on antibiotics for

Lupus symptoms since March of 98. I know that Mino and Doxy are a

no-no while pregnant. Are there any patients who have continued to

take some kind of antibiotic while pregnant?

Very scared,

I don't know if Antibiotic therapy will help in the later stage but I

think it is worth investigating. I have been on Azulfadine through my

2nd Rheumy. The first one didn't have me on anything other than an

anti-inflamatory. The newer one believes in a more aggressive approach,

and I'm all for that. I would definately talk with your dr. if I were

you.

Good Luck

Our first adoptions, older children, were done privately. We knew the birth

mothers. Our latest adoptions were done through Family Connections Adoptions

Agency. The main office is in Modesto, but here in Fresno, CA. we have a

local office. My husband and I taught PreAdopt classes for the agency until

my PA got so bad.

We chose Family Connections because it was one of the few agencies that would

allow us to choose the sex of our child/ren. Since our daughter Molly was

four, and we already had three boys, we wanted to make sure that she had a

sister. We dicided that a sibbling group, in birth order, would be fine as

long as one child was a girl. Growing up with a sister, I jsut really wanted

this for my daughter. Birth order is a big deal to me, but not to everyone.

I read Dr. Lehman's book " Birth Order " and I guess that's what made me

feel the way I do. When families combine, and their children's birth orders

are changed, it can cuase problems. Once you're the oldest, it's hard to

have an older sibbling come into the picture. Also, if you adopt older

children and already have existing children in your family, the older child

generaly has more influence on younger children. Therefore, an older child

who may have emotional problems, etc. will greatly influence your younger

children. Behavior issues are sure to arrise with all children, but

especially in an older adoptee.

As to cost, well it varies. I have a friend who adopted two children from

Korea. One she notes came from her VISA and the other from Mastercard. It's

kind of funny, but, sad in a way too. We can get a loan for a car, but God

forbid we want a child! So, her adoptions ran around $10,000 each. My

children were California Waiting Children, so they only ran $1,500 for the

pair. Family Connections gets lots of State funds for helping to place

special needs children. Though this may sound severe, it can be as simple as

a child who is over the age of two or is of mixed heritage.

There is an agency in town called, Infant of Prague, and I know people wh

have been the birth mother, and others who have adopted. I believe it runs

around $15,000. I have heard that there are children listed on the internet

who are waiting for adoptive families. The older the child, the easier they

are to get. Siblling groups are also realitively easier to get too. White

babies are most difficult to get. And Chinese babies are probably more rare.

The Chinese government generally only releases infant girls, and has lots of

restrictions. Babies from India are available, but follow similar

guidelines. I have a friend who adopted two children from Ethiopia, and it

took a long time to get them home. There are all sorts of things that go on

in international adoptions. But, the people who go through it, wouldn't

trade their kids for anything, so the hard work getting them home is worth

it. I liken it to a really hard pregnancy. Once you've given birth, you

forget all of the pain.

Anyway, I would check out some sites on adoption through the inernet. There

are pros and cons to open adoptions. Knowing the birth families. Our latest

additions were through an agency and we didn't expect to have an open

adoption. But, we have a great relationship with the children's maternal

grandparents, and they are gracious and loving to all of our children. They

were adoptive parents as well, and understood our circumstances. So, we

decided to maintain a relationship with them. We have baby pictures, medical

history and a video of the children with thier birth mother, and a taped

goodbye to them as well. I have lots of pictures of both birth parents and

feel like they won't have as much mystery in their lives when they are older.

Their birth mother died. Their birth father had drug problems and was in

and out of jail alot. The birth father doesn't know where we live.

It's not all easy parenting, but very worth while. Good luck to you.

Amy

Dear ,

I don't know the answer to your question, but surely your doctor can advise

you! Also I have heard that women with auto-immune diseases can have

remissions when pregnant, and go back on meds after the birth.

Good luck.

Lynn,

maybe you have stumbled onto a new treatment -- give patients same

hormones that are present in pregnancy.

Hi, I just must stick this in right here. For years i had been telling everyone

that would listen to me that the only time in my life that I could say that I

felt

well, just felt good and all, was when I was pregnant 3 times. I am thinking

that

if I had had this AIH for so many years, maybe that is why. Wouldn't that be

amazing? You can ask anyone that knows me, and they had heard it many many

times. I thought that maybe my hormones were good at that time or something. I

also had no desire to overeat or anything, I felt good. So for about 27 months

of

my life that I can remember, I have felt good. And that is not a lie either!

My

husband and I had been talking about this only yesterday! The Dr.s I had told

in

the past would just look at me and shrug a shoulder, it took all these years for

someone to listen enough to take tests--what can I say, I don't feel too well

about Drs anymore either! But apparently pregnancy is possible, and all my

babies

were healthy, but I have a teenage girl I want to loan someone for a couple of

years, any takers????? Lynn aih

Sue, I forgot to tell you, my 16 year old daughter is on her way!! I've been

gone a few days and am reading the back email. My husband has been in and out

of the hospital for the last week and they can't figure out what is going on.

He had elevated liver tests, then he had a ultra sound today and they couldn't

see anything so they say, so he is having more tests tomorrow. We really wish

that they would find or not something and get this all over with! Bye for now,

am on the way to read more email. Lynn in Wa. aih

Lynn,

Hard when you miss a couple of days isn't it, posts really mount up.

What are your hubbies symptoms. Which of his liver tests were elevated? I

hope he is feeling better. What other tests will they do? Please let me

know, I'll be thinking about you.

SueB.

Hi all,

Just to add my two cents worth to this topic and reaffirm what some others

have said -- having a child is a very personal decision. It's been incredibly

wonderful and extremely challenging for me. My little boy, , is 21

months old now.

One thing that I would definitely recommend is breastfeeding -- my pregnancy

included an almost complete remission, which lasted for about six months

while we were exclusively nursing. I then had a minor flare and continued to

nurse, which I and my rheumatologist believe was at least partly responsible

for keeping the disease in check through pregnancy-like hormone levels. I had

a major flare when baby was about 12 months and at 14 months changed from

sulfasalazine to plaquenil, which -- although safe -- made my milk bitter and

so, regretfully, put an end to our part-time nursing. Breastfeeding is

definitely best for baby, and probably pretty good for moms with arthritis,

too. It's a wonderful thing, even though getting going does not always come

naturally (it didn't for us).

Our pregnancy was somewhat unexpected, and I was on sulfasalazine and surgam

at the time. Went off both at about six weeks, when I first suspected, and

was pretty much in remission by that point.

We haven't decided yet whether to have another child. is what the

politically correct like to call " spirited, " so while we love him to pieces,

he is more demanding that most and we're not sure whether to dive in again or

not. Arthritis plays some role, since the plaquenil hasn't completely helped.

However, I'm trying to stay away from the methotrexate until we decide about

more kids.

Hope this info is helpful. All the best.

,

I can only tell you my experience...I was not in a lot of pain when I

decided to have another child. I was on Naprosyn 1000mg/day and MTX

15mg/wk. I was doing well. I stopped the MTX for 2 full cycles, but

continued the naprosyn until 3 days before trying to get pregnant. I was in

pain within 24 hours after stopping the Naprosyn, but fortunately I got

pregnant on the first try and went into remission during pregnancy. If you

want to have another child, talk to both your remotologist and OB/Gyn. They

can help you make a plan. Remember, it is likely that you will go into

remission during pregnancy.

One other thought. You didn't mention how old you first child is. My boys

are 2 yrs. 8 months apart and in all honesty, I wish I had waited longer. I

was worried about pregnancy and post partum. I didn't realize how difficult

it would be caring for two young children. That was the real " killer " in

the long run. If I knew what I know now, I would have waited to have my 2nd

child until my first was in school.

Those are my thoughts. Good luck.

Hi. I am wondering how much pain you had before deciding to have a baby.

Were you on any other meds besides the metho? I want to have another, but

have figured I can't. I have severe pain despite numerous DMARDS, narcotic

pain killers and antiinflammatoreis. I really would like to get off these

and have another. What happened to you? When you went off the metho? I take

codeien contin 150 mg three times a day plus tylenol#3. If I have this much

pain while taking these, how would I feel without them?

I know that prednisone can safely be taken while pregnant. Did you try this?

I have had cortisone injections and had NO pain or stiffness for about 3

weeks after. I felt wonderful/ so, by my thinking, I might feel pretty good

with prednisone..right? I know all about the risk and side effects. The

other thing is that I am currently on disability, so I would need to ( I

think) go back to work before getting preg. I don't know if they'd still

cover me if I went off the meds and got preg. So, my idea is to start pred,

try to get off the other meds, get back to work and get preg...am I wishfull

thinking? I wish I knew someone who was on the same drugs, with the same

amount of pain and had gone off the meds and had a baby...

I'll definitely keep the list members updated, although everyone's mileage

may vary, as the saying goes. I do my first reduced injection on Monday.

I'm also going to check out all my dietary recommendations I've gathered over

these last few months to see how else I could potentially help myself through

this.

Hi everyone. I was wondering if any of the members became pregnant while

they were taking meds for P and Pa. I am happy to say that I just found out I

am pregnant. The doctor said the meds were OK for now but not in the last

trimester. I have not taken any meds for the last two days because I am so

unsure. Does anyone have any information? Thanks, Michele in NJ

Congratulations Michele!

I do know with pregnancies that my rheumy told me I would need to be off of

MTX for at least 3 months before considering pregnancy. Don't know if this

is one of your meds, but if so, please check out the risks and what you need

to do.

Best of luck and enjoy planning for your new little addition!

Thank you for your well wishes on my pregnancy. We are so excited. I promise

to keep in touch with the group every step of the way to see how this PA

effects me. I will make sure my husband brings his laptop to the delivery

Hi . I was not on that specific med but the rheumy told me the two meds

I was on was OK until the third trimester. I stopped them until I go to my

new high risk pregnancy doctor. I just don't feel right about taking

something that is OK one month and not the next. I am feeling the effects of

stopping the meds. I forgot how much of my body hurt before I adjusted to the

meds. Thanks again, Michele

Hi ,

I think your doctor is an extemist with little credibility. It's true,

though, that it's harder to get pregnant when you're hyperT or hypoT. So it's

important to get your thyroid function returned to normal, which RAI won't

do. They'll likely make you hypo. Only 14% of patients on ATD's eventually

become hypo. The antithyroid drug (ATD) propylthiouracil (PTU) is considered

safe to use during pregnancy.

Most good doctors recommend trying ATD's for at least 18 mo. (often, like

with Ant Joan you only need to use them a few months) and then follow alt

methods or continue on ATD's, whatever it takes to keep your thyroid hormone

levels normal.

An article in Oct. 99 Postgraduate Medicine predicts that 10-25% of all GD

patients go into spontaneous remission each year. The natural course of GD

is spontaneous remission although symptoms can be of variable severity, with

periods of remission. that's why symptoms in GD are said to wax and wane, and

usually worsen with stress. Estrogens also affect GD so symtoms can, but

doesn't always, also develop again in the postpartum period, that is, up to 6

months after delivery. Good luck, Elaine

We, too, just went through this. Mark was told by the rheumy to be off the

MTX 3-4 months, the OB said 4-5 months, so check with your OB too.

Mark immediately went on prednisone, 10 mg every day, to help with the pain.

His experience is that it caused a major psoriasis flare, but he insisted

the arthritis pain was better on the prednisone than the 25 mg MTX each

week - but that helped the P.

Good luck to you!

Unfortunately, we won't be able to try for another child as Mark has

developed another condition (as yet undiagnosed). We had made it to the

four month mark.

Hang in there. Don't fear the prednisone. I had to take prednisone while

pregnant and nursing for an eye condition...and I have three healthy

babies!! (ages 7, 5, & 3).

I just read your posting on getting pregnant and I have to tell you that I

recently had a miscarriage. They are now looking into the Afulfine I was

taking and told was safe but I have not heard anything yet. Please be careful

and talk to as many doctors and look up the medications before getting

pregnant. I wish you both the best of luck. Michele
