Guest guest
Hi again, I am switching my son from Celexa, which he has been on for four years, to Effexor. My question is has anyone else tried Effexor, and do we have to wean him completely off the Celexa before introducing the Effexor at a low dose, or can we slightly over lap the two?? For example, he was on a whole 20mg Celexa. I have weaned him down to 1/4 that. He is going berserk!!!! Can I go ahead with a small dose of Effexor now, or do we have to be totally OFF Celexa for a week?? I am under a doctors care, and that is what they are recommending. But our pharmacist said that we could over lap the two. Has anyone had this experience and can share it with me?? Trina
Guest guest
Trina, If Celexa and effexor are in the same class of drug you can completely stop giving him the celexa and start the effexor. If they are not in the same class of drug then you MUST wean him completely from the celexa before giving him the new drug. By class of drug I mean that paxil, zoloft, prozac and I believe celexa are all SSRI drugs. This means selective seritonin reuptake inhibitors. Make sure what class of drug you are dealing with and be careful to titrate down slowly. This can have a big effect on your little one! Guest guest
, The SSRI class of drug raise the seritonin level. Low seritonin has alot to do with symptoms of anxiety, obsessive compulsive behaviors, fears and phobias. Jane
Guest guest
Hi Trina, I am embarrassed to tell you I took 20mg of prozac for 5 yrs and just recently switch with only one day off prozac, to effexor. It has taken about two weeks for my body to adjust, but I feel great. There is no reason to wait. My doctor started me right away. I stopped prozac Sunday and started effexor Monday. It was an adjustment the first 3 days or so, but now (it's been about 2 weeks) I feel great. I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if you need anything. switching from Celexa to Effexor > Hi again, > > I am switching my son from Celexa, which he has been on for four years, to Effexor. Guest guest
Why did you switch to Effexor? What's different about Effexor from Prozac? Thanks, Bonnie
Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, I developed an allergic reaction (itching all over) to prozac. I guess now I am officially allergic to all SSRI's per my Dr. Re: switching from Celexa to Effexor > Why did you switch to Effexor? Guest guest
Hi again, I forgot to tell you the difference between effexor and prozac. Effexor is very similar to Welbutrin. These two are antidepressants and work on seretonin (sp?) but also work on either dopamine or epinephrine(sp?) (I not sure) . It also works on seretonin differently from prozac. Prozac acts like a plug (I believe) and effexor acts like a drip - if that makes any sense. Re: switching from Celexa to Effexor > Why did you switch to Effexor?
