On this day in1787, W. Herschel discovered Enceladus, a moon of Saturn.1891 Huggins described the astronomical application of the spectrum. 1960, Sputnik 5 was launched into orbit. It carried two dogs, Belka and Strelka, 40 mice, 2 rats and a variety of plants on-board. All animals were recovered the next day. Noteworthy person born on this day:In 1871: Orville , aviator.
