Hey everyone,

Just a quick question, has anyone ever checked or heard of alcohol in

the KT when it is ready to drink?

Just something I noticed on a web site not long ago, that it has alcohol

in it...

comments?

It is generally accepted that finished KT has about the same alcohol

content as fruit juice.

And yes, fruit juice does contain alcohol. :-)

Thanks Gayle! I wondered about that, I didn't feel or taste any in my

KT, most alcohol I use is in my tinctures I make, as I generally can't

drink the stuff. :-)

Good info to know!

Thanks

It's not how much you accomplish in life that really counts, but how much you

give to others

It's not how high you build your dreams that makes a difference, but how high

your faith can climb

It's not how many goals you reach, but how many lives you touch

It's not who you know that matters, but who you are inside

Believe in the impossible, hold tight to the incredible,

and live each day to its fullest potential.

IMO, KT actually works to decrease alcohol cravings. some times i think i want a

glass of wine, but drink KT instead and that does the trick. i dont consider

myself an addict, though i do drink wine and beer regularly. i cant speak to

someone with a true addiction, but you can not control whether someone drinks or

not, and if he choses to it is not because you brew KT. mouthwash has a higher

alcohol content than KT, even nighttime cold medicines have 10% alcohol compared

to less than one half of one percent for KT. anyone in recovery is bombarded by

exposure to cues that trigger drinking. are you going to get rid of your TV

because of beer commercials? move to a dry county so he doesnt pass a liquor

store? not eat in a restaurant where someone at the next table might order a

drink? for most of us, this is not practical or possible. i am not saying you

shouldnt take your family's needs into consideration but i just dont see KT as

having high

relapse potential and may actually serve as a deterent as recovering alcoholics

crave sugar and this might serve to reduce that craving. again this is an

opinion of mine and not anything based on research or hard facts.

Paragraph one surprised me greatly, never having been adicted to any liquid.

:¬))

Mine's nicotine.

As regards sugar, the SCOBY needs carbohudrate. I doubt the degree of purity is

vital, but the less refined the carbohydrate the more other fkavouring you add

to your brew.

With regard to the alcohol content of kombucha .. As someone who has worked

with people in recovery as part of my job and have had a father and a son

with a problem, I honestly think it would be a really bad idea for anyone

with a substance abuse problem to drink it. It is just too risky. Some

batches really have the taste and flavor and smell and could really trigger

a craving. I don't let my son know about it, and my husband is frankly

nervous about me keeping it in the house if my son is here. I am very

conflicted about the potential benefits for me and risk for him. I want

very much to brew my own but am hesitant about doing so because it is harder

to keep unobtrusive if you are brewing. Anyone who thinks 0.25 to 0.35%

doesn't matter to someone in recovery has probably not ever worked with the

addiction prone. Just the smell alone could be enough to set some people

off. My husband says to him it tastes like drinking a wine cooler and he

won't drink it.

As for the use of cane sugar - yes that is white sugar. But the scoby eats

up the sugar as part of the fermenting process. That is a conflict for

folks as well - but if you let it process till most of the sugar is gone,

you are not getting much. Sort of another decision for each person to make.

I am not knowledgeable enough to know if the cane sugar is necessary. For

me there are some uses for which nothing else really works as well as cane

sugar - I just really watch it carefully on the amount. Organic cane is

still cane sugar, just grown with organic farming methods.

Over on " this side " we were out of town yesterday and ate out. I had a bottle of

" Fentiman's Botanically brewed Mandarin and Seville orange Jigger "

Which boasted

" Not more than 0.5% alcohol by volume " on the label.

sorry, i just assume everyone has been on here awhile. GT Dave's is a commercial

brand of KT. To me, it is like " Coke " is to soda, the most well-known and

available brand in stores. it has great flavors and a mild, pleasant taste. you

could, of course, use any brand, but some i have tried have not been very tasty,

and when you are spending up to $5 a bottle, its nice to have a known brand that

is available wherever you go. so, in general, when someone refers to GTs, think

" commercial KT " . i cant post the link to their website here, but just google GT

Daves kombucha and it will give you the link.

yes, it is good to ease into drinking it for a variety of reasons, whether you

believe in detox principles or not, you are introducing a foreign bateria into

your body. ideally we would do that with all new foods we try.

good luck
