Guest guest
I also have this problem with my son who is now 19. But it isn’t just the word no – its also ‘stop’, don’t, can’t, etc…………Its an ongoing problem still – but is often solved with pre-empting what he is going to become upset about and having an ‘indirect’ conversation by way of speaking to someone else in front of him. For instance, in your situation I would say to my sister in front of him ‘Oh, we can only go on holiday in September. What a shame. But we can do other things…….”. I can’t always speak to my son directly. And when there is nobody there to have a ‘fake’ conversation with, I pretend to have a telephone conversation. Sounds mad, I know – but it has worked many times when nothing else has. Hope you get there! Hugs! Here's Exactly What You'll Get With the this DVD Collection: Tasreen Alibhai, N.D. Tasreen Alibhai, N.D., is the Medical Director of Vitalia Health Care and the Canadian Hyperbaric Institute in Vancouver, British Columbia. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of British Columbia, and her Doctoral of Naturopathic Medicine at Seattle’s Bastyr University. She completed her advanced Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Training program at Hyperbarics International in Key Largo, Florida. She is a licensed naturopathic doctor, and an expert in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, chelation IV therapy, mesotherapy and environmental medicine. The Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Children with Autism Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has shown promising results in the treatment of autism. HBOT involves the breathing of pure oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber – pressurized above one atmosphere absolute (ATA). Originally utilized to treat a life-threatening condition known as the ‘bends’, in divers, its therapeutic use has expanded to include carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, osteomyelitis, and, more recently, autism. HBOT enhances blood flow to the brain, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and mobilizes stem cells from the bone marrow. Deficits in all of these have been implicated in the development of autism. A typical treatment protocol for autism consists of breathing pure oxygen for sixty minutes at 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, which corresponds to a depth of ten to seventeen feet of seawater (FSW). A substantial majority of patients experience benefits with HBOT. These include improvements in language, eye contact, socialization, appetite and digestion. It can also reduce the intestinal inflammation associated with bacteria, fungus and parasites. Current research and case studies will be presented. Learning Objectives: * To understand how HBOT can help in the treatment of autism. * To discuss current treatment protocols used. * To discuss current research and case studies. ________________________________ Clack, B.Sc., N.D. 2 Disk Set Clack, N.D., received his Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Toronto (Mississauga) 1981, and his Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle in 1997. He practiced in B.C. for 2 years after graduation, and moved home to Ontario in 1999. Clack has been specializing in the treatment of Autism and related disorders for approximately 8 years. In working with these families, he has researched and implemented many treatments that are recommended by DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!). His formal training in treating Autism Spectrum Disorders “ASD” patients began with " Open Windows " (Toronto) training from Dr’s Bradstreet and Kartzinel in 2003. He has completed DAN! Physician Levels 1 and 2 training between 2005 and 2009, and several Physician’s training sessions with Great Plains Laboratory. He is giving back to the Autism community through lecturing, teaching and research on top of his busy practice. Neuroinflammation & Oxidative Stress: The ABC’s of Testing & Treatment New research is focused on how oxidative stress and inflammation impacts the nervous system, resulting in some of the symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders. This lecture reviews research about the mechanisms of oxidative stress, how it may affect the human body, and testing that is currently available to assess it in each patient. Treatment using supplements, herbal and homeopathic medicines will be reviewed. Learning Objectives: * Parents will learn which tests are currently available to determine the level of oxidative stress may affect their child(ren). * Learn which Biomedical treatments (including nutritional supplements, herbal medicines or homeopathic medicines) may be effective in reducing or eliminating this form of stress. Successful Outcomes: How an Integrative Treatment Plan Helps Your Child Dr. Clack's lecture will outline, with the use of case studies, how to prepare to work with practitioners who are experienced with biomedical treatments. Potential pitfalls are covered as well as planning what to do and expect for the initial 2-4 years. Since he started working with children on the autism spectrum in 2001, Dr. Clack has noted some interesting trends in test results and recently published the results of this study. The presentation will include a review of the test results of 25 ASD children randomly chosen from his practice in southern Ontario. An overview of the tests most commonly found to yield significant findings will be presented. Learning Objectives: * Parents and practitioners with learn insights to the interpretation of the results of biomedical testing. * Parents and practitioners will learn to use testing to direct treatment and avoid stereotyped treatments which may not be necessary for every child. ________________________________ Shula Edelkind When Shula Edelkind’s second child became a behavior problem, she followed doctor’s orders: she took parenting courses and put him on stimulant medications. When he developed severe symptoms of Tourette syndrome (TS) the medications were stopped. One day Shula saw a TV show on the Feingold diet. While she didn’t have much hope that it would help her son’s behavior and tics, she tried it. Remarkably, within four days her son was behaviorally normal and within months there were no tics. Her son has been in permanent remission for 27 years, and excelled in his graduate studies. Shula is now webmaster and research librarian of the Feingold website, finding and sharing medical studies on the connection of diet, health, and behavior. She returned to school to study bio-psychology, graduating magna cum laude from Agnes College in 1998. Autism, AD(H)D, Asthma: How Can the Feingold Program Help? This presentation will explore the history and medical effects of synthetic additives – in particular the artificial food colorings and petrochemical preservatives. Learning Objectives: * A review of the research showing physical and behavioral reactions of animals and humans to these chemicals, with emphasis on symptoms of Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and other diagnosed disorders. * The Feingold Program – which simply removes specific additives -- will be proposed as a first step in treatment, often resulting in enormous health benefits far out of proportion to the relatively simple dietary changes required. The diet itself will be outlined, as well as some of the research supporting its use. * Finally, the work of the Feingold Association in providing direction, training, and support for those wishing to use the Feingold diet will be described. A book called “Behavior, Learning and Health: The Dietary Connection” will be provided each participant, as well as brochures that they can use for their clients or patients. ________________________________ Marcy Henschel Marcy Henschel son’s were diagnosed with Autism in 2005, so Marcy has immersed herself in autism literature, education, training and attended over 25 conferences both biomedical and therapy related to help her boy’s heal and reach their potential. Learning Objectives: * Identify and gain and in-depth understanding of the underlying causes of nutritional deficiencies in children with autism. * Identify the foundational “basic” nutritional supplements that are commonly used for children with autism * Gain a basic understanding of why and how these “basic” supplements can help improve many symptoms of autism. * Identify the nutrients and ingredients in nutritional supplements that should not be given to children with autism. * Identify specific nutritional supplements that may be useful for certain conditions including heavy metal toxicity, digestive disorders, intestinal dysbiosis, mood disorders, and others. Shaw, Ph.D. Bonus Presentation Added Today 3 Disk Set Shaw, Ph.D., received a Ph.D. in biochemistry and human physiology from the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board certified in the fields of clinical chemistry and toxicology by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He has supervised large endocrinology, nutritional biochemistry, toxicology and immunology departments in positions at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Kline Laboratories in Atlanta, GA. He was Director of Clinical Chemistry, Endocrinology and Toxicology at Children’s Mercy Hospital, the teaching hospital of the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Shaw is now the Director of The Great Plains Laboratory for Health, Nutrition and Metabolism in Lenexa, Kansas specializing in testing for autism spectrum disorders, metabolic disorders in adults and children, PDD, hyperactivity, inborn errors of metabolism and adult disorders such as depression, Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. H e is author of Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD and is a frequent speaker at autism conferences worldwide including ACAM, DAN, ASA, AAEM, NAA and AIM. He is the stepfather of a child with autism and has helped thousands of parents and physicians successfully contribute to improving the lives of children with autism. Introduction to Biomedical Treatments in Autism, AD(H)D and Related Disorders The talk covers Dr. Shaw’s perspective on the metabolic causes of autism and developmental disorders. Genetic variations of the immune system, inborn errors of metabolism, or adverse reactions to immunizations lead to recurrent infections that are commonly treated with antibiotics. A yeast overgrowth of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract occurs following the elimination of the GI normal flora with antibiotic treatments. Yeast produce abnormal compounds called gliotoxins and other immunotoxins harmful to the immune system. Because the immune system is weakened, the child gets another infection and more antibiotics until a vicious cycle is established. The yeast produces a number of harmful effects on the child’s metabolic and neurological functioning, including impairing gastrointestinal functioning, production of excess oxalates, inhibiting energy production, and eliciting food allergies that may manifest as behavior disorders. Discussion will include why high oxalate foods may contribute to negative effects including formation of crystals in tissues.Learn about the most common metabolic causes of autism and developmental disorders: intestinal dysbiosis, cholesterol deficiency, food allergies, industrial pollution, heavy metals intoxication, mineral imbalances and high levels of oxalates. There will be a discussion on how IgG food allergies affect behavior and how to detect the most common allergens. Find out how the mechanism of opiate peptides affect the brain, their connection with allergies, and the importance of a gluten and casein-free diet. During the presentation there will be a focus on the damaging effects of heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum and others, the mechanism of their effect on human development and ways to detect and treat high levels of these metals. Learn about the correlation between low cholesterol and brain function. & nbs p; Dr. Shaw will introduce the concept of cholesterol supplementation for certain patients,\ and review many other effective ways of correcting or reducing abnormalities with biomedical interventions. Learning Objectives: * Find out about the newest biomedical research developments. * Treat ‘inborn errors of metabolism’. * Learn about leaky gut syndrome. * Treat food allergies using special dietary interventions including eliminating wheat and dairy. * Find out why heavy metals play a role in autism and developmental disorders. * Learn why the level of cholesterol is important for brain function. Promising New Insights and Latest Developments for Autism, AD(H)D and Related Disorders Many new technologies have revealed significant new factors as causes of autistic spectrum disorders including genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, disciplines involved in mass screening of genes, proteins, and metabolic processes in humans. These technologies have already lead to significant new therapeutic trials for autistic spectrum disorders. In addition, a number of recent studies have implicated both environmental factors and genetic factors related to detoxification as critical in autistic spectrum disorders. One of the most promising discoveries has been the finding that the majority of individuals on the autistic spectrum are deficient in cholesterol and have abnormal amounts of cholesterol transport proteins. A recent article indicates that cholesterol supplementation should be considered in all cases of autistic spectrum disorder. Treatment of severe deficiency has lead to reductions of infections, improvements in sleep, social interactions, and growth. Behavior improvements include reduction in self-hurtful behavior, temper tantrums, aggressive behavior, and hyperactivity. Cholesterol is a critical factor in myelin production needed for brain growth and development, a cofactor in the brain development protein sonic hedgehog, a precursor of all steroid hormones and bile salts, and a critical factor in the function of serotonin and oxytocin receptors. Oxytocin, a hormone that stimulates social interaction and trust, has been found to be low in the blood of children with autism. Supplementation of oxytocin reduces autistic behaviors; combining cholesterol and oxytocin may be an especially effective treatment. Learning Objectives: * Learn why cholesterol is an essential nutrient necessary for growth, development, and normal behavior. * Understand the evidence for abnormal cholesterol production and/or transport in different types of autism and treatments that are currently available. INTRODUCING: QCHARMS! Help your child transition between activities, tolerate sensory input, and manage behavior with QCHARMS QCharm gives your child visual cues at their fingertips. QCharms is a revolutionary system that uses the Dyna Vox Mayer- Boardmaker images on charms that attach to a portable wristband and allows for instant visual cues in every environment. The charms are easy to replace, the wrist bands are durable and the system is pre-packed in a kit that can be carried with you. Each QCharm kit contains 30 icon charms and 3 reward charms that can be used for your own cuing system. For maximum usability, two wristbands, two keychains as well as a portable carrying case are included. Benefits for Educators Cues are portable across the school setting (via the child's wrist/backpack/the educator etc) > the band may be handed off to other educators (ie. Homeroom teacher to the Inclusion classroom teacher) > the system is subtle and fashionable, which draws less unwanted attention from others > the child/educator can refer to it frequently > the close proximity of the band/cues is easier to see (vs. looking at a poster hung on a wall that may be relatively far away) > there is no need to cut/laminate/Velcro visual cues > may use the cues to facilitate language development > cues may be used to teach " cause and effect " Benefits for Caregivers Cues may be referred to in any location around the house (rather than having to find the cues posted in one part of the house) > cues may be referred to when child/caregiver are outside or somewhere in the neighborhood > cues may be handed off to a sitter/other caregiver > no need to cut/laminate/Velcro visual cues (more time to spend with the child/individual) > cues may be easily transported out into the community (store/restaurant/playground/friend's and relative's house/movie theater/place of worship/etc) > consistent use of cues improves behavior/language/sensory modulation/task transition which may lead to more respite opportunities for the primary caregiver(s) > may use the cue to facilitate language development > cues may be used to teach " cause and effect " Benefits for the Individual Beneficial visual cues are easily accessed > can see that letters combine to make words and words match pictures > can see that facial expressions (in others) are a way to signal what the other person is feeling > cues that depict facial expressions may be used to help the individual identify what he/she is feeling > cues can be frequently referenced to remind of upcoming events/tasks, schedule changes, safety reminders, rewards to anticipate > cues can be referenced to communicate a need > cues can be used to remind the person what strategies he/she can use to adapt to environmental stressors (ie. Loud noise)Benefits for Others (relatives, siblings etc.) Cues help the relative/sitter/etc communicate in a way that is familiar to the individual (which is important in the reduction of tantrums and in the improvement of desirable and safe behavior) > cues are easily portable and fashionable which may increase the chances of the relative/sitter actually using the cues > visual cues also remind the relative/sitter/etc what is coming up next > cues/reward symbols can be easily referenced to shape behavior and to communicate needs/information to the individual with autism > no more cutting/laminating/velcro > facial expression cues may be referenced in order to help identify what the individual is feeling. Then, appropriate changes can be made and words of reassurance can be spoken > facial expression cues help the secondary caregiver explain to the individual what someone else is feeling > safety cues remind the relative/sitter/etc what hazards to anticipate and what cues to use to prevent a dangerous situation > cues help the secondary caregiver reinforce " cause and effect " Why are visual supports so important? * They are an environmental cues that we can see which help improve organization, communication and social/environmental interaction. * Some examples of visual supports include: calendars; Palm Pilots; Post-it notes; grocery lists; etc. The general population uses visual supports and now we are offering a system to help those whose function relies heavily on visual learning. * Children with Autism spectrum disorder need consistent structure, repetition and rewards in order to habituate to external (and internal) stimuli so that they may replace undesirable behavior with more socially acceptable behavior. * Visual supports can be used by family, friends, educators, therapy personnel, sitters...to name a few. By consistently presenting the child with the cues, other people besides the primary caregiver may care for the child. * This means there is potential for respite for the primary caregiver! Testamonial: QCharm helps our special needs preschoolers anticipate their daily schedules! They are easy to individualize for each child's program... " - LaCroix, M.S., P.T. Re: explosive behavior when told " No " Posted by: " drissia wright " ritzywright@... ritzywright Thu May 10, 2012 3:43 pm (PDT) There is a long story behind this, and it is our fault; mine and dad's. He heard us planning the trip for Sept. My other son is coming in to join the family. Then Dad asked if he wanted to go to the beach or the mountains, so he said the beach. He became so excited that he wanted to talk about it with his speech therapist, so she put it on the calender. In the mean time Dad says if he really wants to go that bad to find a place for 2 or 3 days. So he put it on the calender. Once it is there, it is written in stone as far as he is concerned. Then today, Dad started saying we were going in Sept-17 weeks away and we could go to the mountains next month, so he exploded. After the big fight, he calmly takes a marker and marks through the beach and writes something else in the spot. Then Dad comes in and says if it is that important we can go for 2 or 3 days and how he just can't take this anymore. I look at it like it is our fault. I told him 3 weeks ago, not to mention anything he wasn't ready to do. Now I think it would not be wise to mention it or to go and if he doesn't want to go to the mountains, we can stay at home until Sept. He may not even want to go then. He is a strong willed young man just like his Dad. What do you think? Have you ever dealt with a similar situation?
