I am the Uncle of a young nephew with Asperger's Syndrome - Autism who will be seven on July 15th and shares that birthday with his cousin, my youngest daughter, who will be 4 onJuly 15th. My Mother has Alzheimer's with a Progressive Dementia; My Father-in-Law, a former M.D. in Grosse Pointe died from Parkinson's Disease after a 20 year battle in December; my wife's youngest brother died at the age of 19 from Bone Cancer; my Mother's family has been terribly beset by Hemophilia which has already caused the death of my only maternal first cousin - a brilliant young man; my youngest brother has schizophrenia - bipolar; and lastly, my daughters were born with severe Food Allergies and Anaphylaxis to Peanuts, Dairy, Seafood, and Wheat. My oldest Daughter and I have severe GERD and Asthma as well. I am glad to be here and look forward to contributing to the group and getting to know the members here. New Member to the group Hi, I am the mother of a four year old who was just diagnosed with autism. I am looking for any advise and info I can. The book by McCandless: Children with starving brains -- is full of great information. amazon has it at 2/3's the price. If you get it from Dr. McCandless' website at full price, you can be on her email list and ask her questions. It's a very comprehensive book. And this list is a fountain of answers too! It is a nightmare. He finally qualified for SDC. It has been a tough year for him and our family. Sometimes it is hard not to curl up in a corner and cry. It has given me the means to be a strong advocate for my son, Liam, (13 months) and get the second opinion that my gut was telling me we needed. I noticed Liam's curve when he was 6 months old however I thought it was something that would clear up on its own like so many other things with babies. It wasn't until his 9 month check up that I asked his ped to take a really close look because I suspected scoliosis. He ordered x-rays which confirmed my suspicion and revealed a 29 degree curve. At 10 months he was put in a soft brace that seems to be working well, kind of. In brace X-rays take his curve to 7 degrees! I know it sound promising but the brace doesn't seem to address what I believe is a compensatory curve developing in his lower back. Just yesterday I found, who I believe is the only doctor in Wisconsin that does EDF casting and made an appointment. From what I've been reading I really think a cast is the best course of treatment for Liam. I'm no orthopedic surgeon and can't pretend to be but I REALLY look forward to our appointment on the 26th to hear what he has to say.
