Guest guest
The benefits of 100% grass-fed bison have caused a very strong demand for this meat option. We have not seen a lot of interest of late since the price increases of 2011. We have an efficient connection with at NorthStar Bison. Find info here: www.northstarbison.com. Please, consider that our private food club is not technically a buying club, since we actually lease our dairy animals from our farm family source. Common sense will indicate that most of the " cost " of food is in the management and input (feed, etc). As food consumers, we are happy to support the actual costs of this kind of quality food - produced to our high standards. We need to continue to demand our right to support our lawful, healthy food sources. The building of sustainable food systems should be used a model for building healthy communities, not treated as criminal activity.. Northstar. Its a 100% grass fed. I ve been there and checked it out myself. They dont even come in to calve.
Guest guest
Here is their write up on their Bison meat: Naturally Raised Bison.... Located in east central Minnesota, the Eichten Bison Ranch has about 350 head of American Plains Bison (Buffalo). Our animals are raised on native pasture grasses, hay, oats and corn silage (the whole corn plant chopped). We grow all the crops the bison consume with no pesticides or herbicides. Bison meat is the most flavorful meat most people have ever tasted. " It tastes like meat used to taste. " Many notice a sweeter flavor than beef, which adds to the richness of the meat. It is not " gamey " or wild tasting. Bison meat is just naturally flavorful and tender. It tastes great by itself and will enhance your favorite recipe. Our Bison Meat... A strong relationship between the human and buffalo has existed for thousands of years. Bison sustained the lives of the explorers and settlers going west as well as the Native American. They were believed to be the most important of the wild animals in the development of North America. Once an integral part of the Indian's way of life, the American Bison is again a central part of the lives of many Americans today. The Bison stand as a symbol of the American West, an animal of survival and our American Heritage. Many refer to this magnificent animal as " Buffalo. " As the buffalo becomes more and more popular in the Livestock industry, you will see the " Bison " and " American Buffalo " are being used interchangeable to refer to the same animal. The Bison is indeed the true American buffalo we know and consumers need to avoid the confusion between Bison and Water Buffalo. Bison returns today as a lean red meat source with all the important characteristics, which the health conscious consumer of today is demanding. Bison meat is good and good for you! Quality Bison meat has excellent texture and flavor-plus the benefits of low fat, calories, cholesterol and high vitamins, minerals and protein. Guest guest
Eichtens is a nice local and family-run business, but be sure to note that Eichten's buffalo are grain and corn-finished, NOT 100% grass-fed, whereas meat from Northstar Bison definitely is. The grain-finished bison meat is as inappropriately imbalanced on Omega 6 fats and lack of CLA as feedlot beef. Almost everyone these days " wants " to be grass-finished especially the bison crowd, but very few are, probably less than 1% of the bison meat. Number One Reason: It's really HARD to do! Few people have the amended soils, biodiverse grasses and the proper rotational grazing management to get the Brix index high enough to fatten animals in the right amount of time. Likewise, herds that have had any amount of grain in the past have not been selected for the true " grass genetics " so the poor-doers keep breeding along with the efficient ones.
