Guest guest
My son was diagnoses with ocd last year. It started when 2nd grade began. His 2nd grade teacher described him as the model student. This year he behaves hyper-kinetic, distracted, and a little bit goofy/irritating. His third grade teacher is very understanding and knowledgable about OCD(family member has it). She says if she didn't know better she would have pegged him as an ADD kid but finds it difficult to seperate his OCD/anxiety from attentional issues. He has been on Zoloft for 14 months. Could the med be responsible for this change of behavior? My husband even notices the difference at Boy scout meetings. He suffers no more from intrusive thoughts or any OCD thanks to 50mg of Zoloft and CBT so we are lucky in that respect...but we worry about what else the meds may be doing? I've searched the literature and found nothing...but thought someone might have some anecdotal evidence that this may happen.
Guest guest
Hi, my daughter had many OCD issues at 7 so the first med we tried was Zoloft. She felt better and happy within 5 days and seemed so much more upbeat, however,...it activated her. She appeared ADHD as all of a sudden she was blurting things out, jumping up and down on her bed at nightime and couldn't settle down. We knew it was the zoloft. So we switched to Lexapro and combined with CBT, she has no OCD symptoms currently and she has been on Lexapro for 1 1/2 years. People react so differently to meds that what works for 1 person doesn't for another and it is a lot of trial and error. Sue
Guest guest
My 11 year old was diagnosed w/ocd 1 year ago and then put on Zoloft. It seemed to help w/the depression on the low dose (25mg) but then as we upped it he became actived by it. He would get out of control, run around the house harrassing people. He had a crazed look in his eyes. Then he started cutting himself with knives. The p-doc took him off the Zoloft (he was on 100mg by then) cold turkey and had him take abilify as needed for agitation(he took it 3 0r 4 times). That all happened in June of this year. He has not been back on any meds and is doing well. Sometimes he gets a little out of control but it's easier to get him back. > > My son was diagnoses with ocd last year. Guest guest
Wow Laurie! I don't have any answers for you but I thought I was reading my own post for a minute! We're going through the SAME EXACT thing right now. My son is also in 3rd grade and has been described as a model student every year until this one. His teacher actually suggested having him tested for ADHD at fall conferences. She also has an immediate family member with OCD so she has a good grasp on how anxiety can make kids behave. I was caught so completely off guard by her marking him down so much in everything because he is " distracted and fidgety " I didn't even know how to respond. I know he's been worried about germs and kids going home sick, coming back the next day and then touching things he has to touch. So it very well could be that he's just anxious. Or just wigglier this year because he is a boy and he is eight! so hard to know!! He has also been on 50 mg of zoloft for about 18 months, I was wondering if it could be that the ssri just makes him " not care " as much about being a " model student " ? We upped his zoloft to 75 mg a few weeks ago and so far I've seen no difference (good or bad!). He has an appt with his pdoc tomorrow so I'll ask her if there could be a relationship between the distractability and zoloft. I'll let you know what she says! Let me ask you this - are you seeing the same behavior at home? I don't! le
