Guest guest
Hi everybody. Well, I caught 's horrible chest cold last week. She's improving, I'm eating my words that I swore she'd get pneumonia again from this one... she's doing pretty well! Baby sister and dh just got sniffles, I got full blown hacking and a sore throat so intense I finally got out the trusty flashlight and had a look. Dozens of tiny clear blisters on my soft palate. No white spots, I've never had strep throat in my life, and I have no tonsils to inspect. Called my doc, who is now an hour away (each way) since we moved. There are two docs in the practice, the main one seems very smart but curt, the other is a complete witch -- she has yelled at me twice, once for not taking decongestants with a chronic ear infection (They give me heart palpatations. She said take them anyway. The ENT I ended up going to said I needed abx not decongestants, that she was wrong anyway) and once when I called her on the way to the ER on Christmas Eve two years ago when I had broken my toe. Excuse me for checking with my Primary Care Provider before going to the ER, I was just making sure I didn't get stuck with the bill! Anyway!!! The doc said the blisters sounded viral, but to come in for strep test the next day, the witch would be in (well, HE didn't say that). Well, two sick kids and other life stuff happening and I did NOT want to see that doc, plus everything I looked up said white spots for strep and the only thing I could find that gives you throat blisters is coxsackie virus (a'la Hand Foot and Mouth in kids). So I decided to give it a day, rest when I could (HA!), see what happened. Well, it's now five days later and those blisters are STILL there!! I've been gargling vinegar water (down home remedy from my country mother) -- the throat isn't as sore, the chest cough is improving slowly. I feel generally somewhat improved but not good. Today I am light headed and everything seems a little bright, as if I haven't eaten, but I am eating almost normally!! I don't know what to think. Very low grade fever if anything at all... was a little over 100 last week but now it's just over 99 (morning) which never impresses the docs. I really hate the thought of driving an hour each way and waiting forever for them to fit me in in the office with two bored kids tagging along. Peek in the throat, say " looks viral " and send me packing. Part of me is even worried I'm too light headed to drive that far. I need a closer doc and will get on that, but that doesn't help me now as it takes a little time to change your PCP, I'm stuck with my doc for now. I guess I'm wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone. I'll have to call the doc today... I guess I shouldn't take the chance this is something that can hurt me -- the kiddies need me to be well! But it's so hard to fit in your own health issues when you're taking care of any child, let alone sick one(s)!! I wanted to go to Urgent Care last Wed. night -- that would be FAST, the kids were in bed, it's close by, dh was home. Dh looked at me like I was nuts, said, " How much does that... " then didn't finish with the word " cost " because he realized how callous that sounded. Either I need to go or not, right? So that's when I called the doc instead. Urgent Care would either be a $15 or $50 co-pay, a regular office visit is $15 co-pay, but it's three or four hours of my time, probably $7 in gas and tolls and $1,000,000 in aggravation with the kids along, double that if I get the Witch doctor!!!!!! SIGH Thanks again to all who wrote before... I've been too ill to respond properly or read new mail. Guest guest
Hi Just a quick thought. I had this as an adult (it's much more severe and lasts longer if you get it as an adult) and it was the coxsackie virus (aka, hand-foot-mouth disease). I had it before I was diagnosed with a primary immune deficiency and, because of how bad it was, it was actually the virus that compelled me (after years of sinus infections, etc.) to find out what the heck was going on with my body. Anyway, do you have any red spots on your hands or feet? Those are like little inside blisters. Also, I got a prescription for a cream that went in my mouth and numbed the pain from my blisters. I was at the point that it was hard to drink and impossible to eat b/c the pain was so bad. Only time took the blisters away. Hope you're feeling better soon!
