My son, who had the fundo and pyloroplasty about 10 mos ago, has had

both Early and Late Dumping Syndrome and currently dealing with the

late dumping. This is what I have been told......early dumping is

characterized by flushing and pallor of the skin, especially the

face, lethargy, shakiness, and sweaty, clammy skin, and then diarrhea

usually all within about 10-20 min after a feed. Late dumping is more

of a blood sugar issue. It has all of the above (except diarrhea),

but the symptoms last much longer......about 60-90 min. At the worst,

my son would have to sleep off a feed for about an hour or so on the

floor and he would be so weak and lethargic, he could not sit up or

hold his own head up at all. He scared the OT really bad when she saw

it. That is when we KNEW something was really wrong. His sugars would

spike to 260+ 30 min after a feed and bottom out at 40-60 about 60

min after the feed. We had to get a glucometer and check his sugars

at those times. It has to do with the body absorbing the sugar in the

formula really quickly and then the pancreas overreacting and

releasing a lot of insulin, thereby overcompensating for the amount

of sugars in the system. The spike in sugars is due to the fast

absorbtion and the drop is from the overrealease of insulin. He was

hospitalized for 5 days until we had things straightened out. These

things all happened when he was taking gravity bolus feeds through

his tube. Now that he is using the pump to slow the tube feeds down,

he does not have these problems.

As for the tests, I know we did not have any of them done, unless the

antibody one is the same as the titers test. All she did was to feel

for the lymph nodes and once she felt one, she was sure that it was

not XLA. I have no idea about the tonsils. I will look. I assume

you can see them in the back of the throat. Thx again for the info

and I will look into the testing.
