Guest guest
Well, we made it a whole 39 hours until Kate did herself bodily damage AGAIN. I could NOT believe it. We were in my bedroom as I was going to fold some laundry and she got up on our bed and started jumping on it. Well, I don't allow that for obvious reasons, but best case scenario is that it ruins your mattress! So I tell her to sit, there's no jumping on the bed (big grin like Yeah, right mom), I tell her, " Kate... do you want to be all done? " planning to evict her from the bed entirely. (huge grin, this is all a big joke). So I start to count her (never again!), " One.... Two.... " and when I hit two she turned and took two big bounds toward our headboard and landed on her teeth right on the top of the wood headboard, pushing her upper canine up into the gums and back so that only the corner of the bottom is showing now. The clincher is that her LIP was in the way, and she somehow got two wide gashes at the corner of the top of her lip. Not a horrible spot, scar-wise, but baby they are adding up, you know???!!!!!! So I take her bleeding to the bathroom, unsure of the damage, figuring she's probably killed her two front teeth but assuming they are still in place. Then I notice her canine seems to be mostly missing so I assume it has broken off. Just a big purple horrible bleeding hole with this tiny white thing poking out. In my search in her mouth for the " piece " (that's not there, it wasn't broken), I notice the gashes in her lip and realize they will leave wide smoker-looking-puckers if I don't go get them stitched up. SIGH. 39 hours after the last ER visit!!! She also had a gash on the inside but they elected not to repair that. So I tell in a resigned voice, " , Kate has to go to the hospital again and get more stitches " . I called MIL and she came and picked up, then I took Kate in. It took alot longer this time as the gashes were not bad, it was more a cosmetic issue, though they did keep bleeding here and there. But still, in and out within 3-1/2 hours so not terrible. The doc did a good job as far as the repair, But she was stingy on the shots to numb it and it was obvious Kate felt the second stitch going in and coming out the other side. Too late by that time, no turning back. She fought like a tiger, too. Poor thing is so traumatized now, undoing all those successful ped appts (I figured she was so comfortable at the peds from seeing get every procedure without flinching) Not any more, now she freaks out at the prospect of getting on the scale. So anyway, left the hospital, went and picked up , made some phone calls as the ER said she should see a dentist that day (This was Thursday). At the dentist's office (a ped one) they let her play with stuff and get used to the surroundings, then had me sit sideways on the exam chair with my feet on a footstool Kate facing me straddling my waist. Then someone held her feet behind me, I laid her down so her head was on my knees, and I held her arms. Dentist was leaning over her facing me, seeing her upside down. She was not digging this at all and was yelling " EMILY [something] " over and over, couldn't figure out what she was yelling. Keep in mind was with us. Finally the assistant and I figured it out and the same time, she was yelling, " EMILY'S TURRRRRNNNNNN!!!!!!! " Isn't that funny!??? Threw her big sister under the bus! I've had enough, now do this to instead!!! Then it was time for an X-ray and I was stunned when the doc and two assistants stood there and helped me hold her for two x-rays. I said, " I hope you don't do this often, you'll all grow two heads! " I was touched in a funny way that they did that for us. What a day. She will not take the abx, they gave her penicillin VK and it's strong tasting, nothing masks it. I've put sugar in it. Sugar and orange juice. And water. Dacquiri Ice (non-dairy). Vanilla. Hershey's chocolate syrup. Vanilla and Hershey's chocolate syrup. With the Dacquiri Ice concoction, I added more and more Dacquiri Ice, then it was too much to put in a syringe. So I let it melt, sucked it up in a turkey baster and told Kate we were going to play farm and she was a baby cow. Had her say " Moo! " and then said, here's your milk, baby cow!! (she has seen calves fed that way at the local Lamb's Farm petting zoo). I actually got half the dose in her before she wised up. This stupid scrip is every eight hours, too. Twice a day would be too much to go through this. Ped gave me a new scrip for Augmentin, was the only other thing that covers the mouth, I guess, but she said it's not that much better tasting, so it's a gamble. But it's only twice a day and only 3/4 tsp instead of 1 tsp. But I'd be spending another $20 for that and it's no sure thing. The ER visits were $100 each for my co-pay, the dentist was $114, the med was $10. That's a rough three days. Sigh. And that's not to mention poor Kate and her injuries!! She started swelling up yesterday, so she's got a minor shiner from Tuesday's eyebrow gash and enstein stitches on that, then the stitches in her lip on the same side and now the whole side of her face swelled up from the tooth issue. By the way, they x-ray to check for internal damage (none) and then you just wait for the tooth to sort of migrate back to position. Can take a week, two weeks, a year, who knows. She kept touching the lip stitches with her tongue and saying, " Cwumb? " thinking it was a crumb she needed to get off. Drove her nuts at first! SIGH!! Did I mention SIGH?!!! got a huge time-out yesterday when she took Kate into my bedroom, sat on the bed and started bouncing saying, " C'mon Kate! " to entice her to get up on the bed and bounce. Arrrrrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!! Oh and when I picked up from her little preschool class Friday, someone in class had thrown up. I know it's not really rota season, but I'm still wondering if something lies in wait for us tomorrow!!! (mom to , age 5-1/2, dairy intolerant-related GERD -- currently has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell & other defs... and also to Kate, born 9/19/02, dairy intolerant)
Guest guest
I was told by a fried of mine, a pharmacist, that the best thing to use to mask bad tasting medicine is Smuckers Blueberry, Blackberry or Raspberry syrup. It's found near all of the other pancake syrups. That works the best for us! Guest guest
, We had a very difficult getting to take medication and we found one thing that worked! The pharmacist at Stanford Children's hospital had us buy cola syrup(your pharmacist has to order it). the cola syrup seemed to mask everything. We had tried it all like you but this worked! Just thought I would share our success Lorri ( CVID 14 years old) Re: Sibling at ER AGAIN!!!!
