Can anybody tell me the real difference between psychologist and psychiatry, other than prescribing meds? **** A psychologist has a PhD or Masters, but is not a medical doctor and therefore in most states, can not prescribe medications. They did not go to Medical school. My brother is an MD and he had to do rotations in Psychiatry. He told me that a Psychiatrist is a person who becomes a medical doctor and gets extra training and schooling and years for certification in mental health. A psychologist does counseling and therapy and testing. A psychiatrist does medical tests if needed and prescribes medications. That is the basic difference. in IL Quote
