Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Even though risperdal is not known for increasing language and it has not historically been prescribed for this symptom, my son’s neuro says that he has seen some kids language improve quite dramatically on it at very low doses, which was an unexpected result, so at least HE believes that it can cause a bio-chemical shift that does indeed affect language based upon improved dopamine transmission (this is totally his opinion from clinical observation – not from actual studies or literature describing such)….I asked Yasko about these kids that respond to this drug and she did offer a good explanation of the genetic profile that probably fit with a good response, but now I can’t remember exactly what it was, but it involved MAO mutations (too much dopamine/serotonin) and something else, I clearly remember that these kids were the type that did not need extra dopamine/methylation support, (over-methylated might have been part of it) and this made sense since risperdal slows down dopamine by blocking certain receptors (opposite of a stimulant) ….You could google her site, that post is probably still in files….. Curious… laura, tx for asking. the risperdal is okay. just okay at this time. my son has only been on the med for 3 wks. doc says it takes at least 4-6 wks to tell. we had a bump in the beginning of this road as the pharmacy put the incorrect dosage on the bottle and so my son was getting twice the dose he should of. when i caught the error, a wk already passed. so, that had to be corrected. now, my son is on 1 tab in am and 1 at night. ideally, the doc wants one tab 3x day. we are building up. as for improvements, the main reason he is on risperdal is because after 6 yrs of bio medical treatments, many improvements have been seen which im blessed. however, the hyperness, impulsivity and pica have NEVER gotten better. my son is 9 now. well, he is still hyper but not as much. meaning, instead of bouncing off the walls like a ball in a pin ball machine, he just walks around the house a lot. he's a busy body. he used to run thru the house constantly. now, it's walking around. room to room to room... at school they report he is more focused and is able to complete his work more than before. he is a little more cooperative. so, it appears the improvements are seen more at school than home cause school is more structured. what i have noticed which is interesting is that my son, who is apraxic (babbles constantly and some word approximations and only about 5 intelligible words) is using " speech " more appropriately. i have also noticed an increase in a few words to. for instance, he wanted to go outside. so, he grabbed me by the hand and said " go " . when he wants go to the back yard, he will say " back " for back yard. before, he would just babble and grab my hand and lead me to the location desired. i dont think risperdal is known for increasing language, but, it is certainly doing something along those lines in my tough nut. vicki Quote

Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Well, it's an anti-psychotic but at the time she was self-injuring and not sleeping. He gave it for both of those issues. Zydis is the type that dissolves on the tongue. She takes a very tiny dose being that is has a long half life. I would like to get her off of it but it does help with sleep and other issues. Guest guest Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Kathy, Please reconsider Zyprexa. I am not a fan of antipsychotics for our children, they are not approved for children with ASD and pediatricians across the country are saying that biomed is too dangerous but are a prescribing unapproved (for children) antipsychotic meds. My mother has been on almost every kind of antipsychotic there is over my lifetime, so I am very familiar with them and sometimes their need. Zyprexa made her gain 65lbs which she has never been able to take off and she developed diabetes. There is a class action lawsuit from many others that have been on this medication for causing huge weight gain and development of diabetes, my mother is not currently because it’s too exhausting for her to consider (so I have no financial interest). I know of 2 other individuals that had to get off of Zyprexa quickly due to MAJOR unexplained weight gain. I apologize if I am offending or scaring anyone, that is not my intention. But if I didn’t say anything I would not be able to sleep at night. - From: mb12 valtrex [mailto:mb12 valtrex ] On Behalf Of Hudson Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2006 6:12 PM mb12 valtrex Subject: Re: Vicki/Risperdal What about Zyprexa Zydis? RE: Vicki/Risperdal Even though risperdal is not known for increasing language and it has not historically been prescribed for this symptom, my son’s neuro says that he has seen some kids language improve quite dramatically on it at very low doses, which was an unexpected result, so at least HE believes that it can cause a bio-chemical shift that does indeed affect language based upon improved dopamine transmission (this is totally his opinion from clinical observation – not from actual studies or literature describing such)….I asked Yasko about these kids that respond to this drug and she did offer a good explanation of the genetic profile that probably fit with a good response, but now I can’t remember exactly what it was, but it involved MAO mutations (too much dopamine/serotonin) and something else, I clearly remember that these kids were the type that did not need extra dopamine/methylation support, (over-methylated might have been part of it) and this made sense since risperdal slows down dopamine by blocking certain receptors (opposite of a stimulant) ….You could google her site, that post is probably still in files….. -----Original Message-----From: mb12 valtrex [mailto:mb12 valtrex ] On Behalf Of vickila1@...Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2006 12:37 PMmb12 valtrex Subject: Re: Actose - carole In a message dated 7/13/2006 7:11:04 AM Pacific Daylight Time, elfischer@... writes: Vicki: Is the risperdal working and if so, what symptoms is it helping, or is it just a global improvement? Curious… laura, tx for asking. the risperdal is okay. just okay at this time. my son has only been on the med for 3 wks. doc says it takes at least 4-6 wks to tell. we had a bump in the beginning of this road as the pharmacy put the incorrect dosage on the bottle and so my son was getting twice the dose he should of. when i caught the error, a wk already passed. so, that had to be corrected. now, my son is on 1 tab in am and 1 at night. ideally, the doc wants one tab 3x day. we are building up. as for improvements, the main reason he is on risperdal is because after 6 yrs of bio medical treatments, many improvements have been seen which im blessed. however, the hyperness, impulsivity and pica have NEVER gotten better. my son is 9 now. well, he is still hyper but not as much. meaning, instead of bouncing off the walls like a ball in a pin ball machine, he just walks around the house a lot. he's a busy body. he used to run thru the house constantly. now, it's walking around. room to room to room... at school they report he is more focused and is able to complete his work more than before. he is a little more cooperative. so, it appears the improvements are seen more at school than home cause school is more structured. what i have noticed which is interesting is that my son, who is apraxic (babbles constantly and some word approximations and only about 5 intelligible words) is using "speech" more appropriately. i have also noticed an increase in a few words to. for instance, he wanted to go outside. so, he grabbed me by the hand and said "go". when he wants go to the back yard, he will say "back" for back yard. before, he would just babble and grab my hand and lead me to the location desired. i dont think risperdal is known for increasing language, but, it is certainly doing something along those lines in my tough nut. vicki How low will we go? Guest guest Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Yes, my daughter has gained 15 lbs in the last 6 months, although she is going through puberty. I wish Dr. B. never had prescribed it for her. I know why he did it, her legs were bruised up from her kicking herself. I would love to get her off it, but even when I cut it way down (she takes only 2.5 mg) she wakes up at night and cannot go back to sleep all night long. I have tried Melatonin and also she used to take Clonidine, but it stopped working for her. I need to talk to our DAN about trying a new medicine for sleep. Thank you for you concerns and information on this. Guest guest Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 in regards to the gains in speech for my son on risperdal, his behaviorist (at school) believes it may be because he is beginning to slow down (a little!) and he is accessing the environment better. who knows! my son is only on .25mg, 2x per day. his doc may want to go up to 3 x per day. im not real thrilled about this med but, it is doing something positive for the time being. vicki Quote
