Just a side note here... I also had been on anti-depressents for a while. I was able to go off of my anti-depressant 3 months later! Something to look forward to, welcome! Andra Quote
Guest guest Posted March 2, 2001 Report Posted March 2, 2001 Hi, Aimee! Wow, you really have jumped two major hurdles within one day! Old habits are HARD to change-but you're so dedicated and focused that you were able to overcome those obstacles (milkshake and working out despite no sleep) anyway! Congratulations! I'm in my second year of grad school for Psychology and actually decided to develop a specialty in Health Psychology because I so strongly believe in the association between depression and exercise. I have no doubt that you will accomplish your goals. You're already made the first step, and that's sometimes the hardest one to make! And hey, if milkshakes are your weakness, GREAT-this program is for you! Try Myoplex Lite, they're my FAVORITE treat when I'm craving chocolate yogurt. :-) Just think, next time you have a " chocolate " ML shake, you'll be enjoying without any guilt! :-) Good luck, (SC) Quote
Guest guest Posted March 2, 2001 Report Posted March 2, 2001 WooHoo!!!!!! You go girl!! Welcome to the program Aimee :)I know you will get better at jumping those hurdles in the future, and they wont seem so HUGE next time .....although you did GREAT this time around!! I try to look at obstacles as being there to teach us more self discipline......they are sometimes necessary to face today, to show us how much we've improved over yesterday ~~ Hi all-Well, my name's Aimee and it's D3W1 for me... Guest guest Posted March 2, 2001 Report Posted March 2, 2001 Hi all- Well, my name's Aimee and it's D3W1 for me... I'm 23 years old and live in Southeastern PA. I was married almost two years ago and have put on between fifteen and twenty pounds since. Worse than the weight, though, has been the extreme decrease in my energy level, and I've finally decided to change the bad habits that have been such a burden. Last year, I was diagnosed with clinical depression and began taking medication to help improve my quality of life. Despite my desire to believe otherwise, this drug can't and won't do all of the changing for me. With the medication, I am a calmer, more functional human being. But I'm still at a higher weight than is comfortable, I'm still exhausted all of the time, and I'm still suffering from some pretty low self-esteem. All of the drugs and all of the therapy in the world won't change this without my active participation. So, I'm pretty excited. It's only been three days, but I feel as though I've already leaped a thousand hurdles. I've been doing well with the eating plan, but yesterday afternoon I gave into a regular milkshake...I felt just awful after! Instead of giving up though, and sinking into self pity, I continued through the rest of the day as I had planned. It felt so good last night to realize I stuck with it. Another " hurdle " appeared this morning. I had had a terribly restless night...barely slept at all. When I finally did nod off, the alarm began to buzz! My husband, who I had asked to " encourage " me out of bed, nudged me...but I whined " I hardly slept at all, I'm not going to go. " Well, I lay there for a few minutes, beating myself up. This is ridiculous, I thought. There is no way that an hour of sleep is worth an entire day of GUILT because I skipped a workout. So I got up and went. It felt great. Thanks so much for being here. This is an inspiring place to be. Aimee Quote

Guest guest Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Hello everyone. I have 17 yo twin boys that were diagnosed with aspergers last year. I feel so guilty after eading so many posts where children have been diagnosed at a young age. Never having kids before me, my family, husband everyone just thought the boys were very shy and had a few quirks that were a little unique. Such as barely being able to talk but knew every dinosaur there is and pronoucing them better than I could. Things really got intense when we moved to the lake and sent our kids to a small private school.(they were entering 6th grade then) We had always gotten reports that they weren't working up to potential blah, blah, blah... Then last year we finally took them to a pyschiatrist and they were diagnosed adhd(inattentive), one depression and the other OCD. Things have gone down hill since. I won't go into great detail. One son ended up in the pysch ward ( I had him committed because he was threatening me and threatening suicide and having meltdowns continously, refusing to go to school etc.) Anyway now one is on meds and the other has since been diagnosed bipolar not depression. The bipolar son is not on anything and I have to say that he is better than ever. (right now, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop). He said the meds he was on were messing him up and he couldn't 'feel' his feelings. I must say when he was on meds he slept ALL the time and now he is up and talking to me , nicely, and a different child. Of course it is summer too, so that probably has A LOT to do with it. Anyway, I didn't mean to write a book. I am married but my husband works for an airline so he is out of town alot, half the month, so I am a part time single mom and part time married mom... Thanks for reading if you got this far. I look forward to getting to know some of you and getting some understanding and support from those that know what life is like for us. Toni Quote
Guest guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 My daughter (the oldest one) wasn't dx'd until age 13 - she was mis-dx'd. The other one who has HFA- I knew she was speech delayed but the docs weren't taking it seriously- said they thought she had some hearing problems. If it weren't for the violence she displayed, we wouldn't have realized until later.tsbthatsme <kbtoni@...> wrote: Hello everyone. I have 17 yo twin boys that were diagnosed with aspergers last year. But if he is doing well why medicate anyways right??? Good Luck to you!!!!! My son is 11 with AS. His special interest is the Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster. Guest guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Though my 3rd child was diagnosed with autism at age 2, I didn't figure out my 1st son is aspergers until last year at the age of 13. I had autism staring at me in the face for almost 5 years before I got a clue. As if that's not enough, I came to realize I myself am aspergers only last year. Finding out at 17 is young when you consider it took me over 40 years. Keep in mind that every person has a different set of symptoms and different severity. My 3rd child was diagnosed young because his condition was very severe. Some get diagnosed for other severe issues such as seizures or because their hyperactivity makes the schools complain. For those that are high functioning, we can get so good at hiding it that it takes someone that is very familiar with it to recognize the signs. Many doctors don't even notice it. Just be glad you now know and that they will not go into adulthood in the dark. For my son, just knowing has eliminated his depression. > > Hello everyone. Welcome Toni, my dd was nearly 13 when diagnosed, our family thought many of the same things, do not feel guilty, we all do the best we can.... it is not like ANY kids come with manuals, let alone ours so we can say, oh, well they did this, now I do this! Guest guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Hi Toni, Welcome to our group, your letter was so interesting about you and your twin boys. I can't wait to hear more from you. Where do you live? I am Carolyn and I live in Springfield, Oregon, they were just saying on the news we have the worst air in the USA, and we all have allergies. I belong to this group because I have a son, Marty, who is autistic, has autistic behaviors. He was a fine little baby, developed fine up until about the age of 2 when he started having seizures one day out of the blue. So I took him to a doctor, and they started him on drugs to try and control the seizures. This was back in the 60s when Valium was new, so they pretty much made a Valium addict out of him, he was taking 45 mg. a day to try and control the seizures, and yet they just got worse. Then they told me to put him into the state institution because he was in such bad shape. I was young then and thought they were nuts, still do actually! haha He was diagnosed as retarded, and I am not sure he ever was to tell you the truth, but with all the drugs he has taken, and all the seizures he has had over the years, thousands of them, he no doubt has brain damage from all that, so is retarded in that sense, like we would be if we banged our head real hard on something. He has been through all sorts of behaviors, got real upset, and had meltdowns once he got about 14 and they put him in junior high, then high school, mainstreaming was a new trend then. He had gone to a famous private school for the retarded in our area, up until then called Pearl Buck Center. It has been interesting, he is 41 now, and I take care of him every day, and three grandchildren. Although today I get a day off as my daughter gets a 3 day weekend from work, she delivers mail. I also have two other sons. One of them, Jeff, is in pretty good shape, is a software engineer, but my oldest boy, Tom, is having some problems, serious problems. He has been an alcoholic for many years, and went through de-tox about three weeks ago, and called me last night, and said his doctor says he is bi-polar, and he is on the same drug my son is on for his seizures, Depokote. I thought that was weird. Well guess that is enough of an introduction, sometimes I like to just write, think I have Obsessive Compulsive disease to writing e-mails, gets my mind off my troubles I guess! haha Welcome again, keep on writing, it helps. Guest guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Hi Carolyn in Oregon! Thanks for the welcome. I am in Georgia. I think that is very interesting about Tom. It sounds like he was medicating himself. Alot of alcoholics have depression, bipolar other mental issues and are just medicating themselves with alcohol. I am a recovering alcoholic myself. 12 years sober. I can't believe I am telling everyone that right off the bat. Well, if people want to judge me they can. I am who I am now because of what I went through. I will say some special prayers for your son that he will stay sober. Sounds like you have your hands full taking care of all the kids and Marty. They are blessed to have a mama and granma that cares so much for them. I understand about the writing, I tend to write a miny book every time I reply. I just know that is wonderful to be able to 'talk' to people that know what we are going through! I look forward to getting to know you and everyone else. Have a great day and a great weekend. Guest guest Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 Welcome Toni (piggybacking since I didn’t get the original post) My son was newly 11 when diagnosed, I felt very guilty about missing early intervention opportunities but it fades, he is almost 13 now and “knowing” has helped a lot! YES! Welcome Toni, my dd was nearly 13 when diagnosed, our family thought many of the same things, do not feel guilty, we all do the best we can.... it is not like ANY kids come with manuals, let alone ours so we can say, oh, well they did this, now I do this! I am sure you are a great mom, you obviously care!!! Bernstein <m_bernstein@...> wrote: Toni, welcome aboard! Where do you live, maybe we can find local support for you. And don't feel guilty.....we were diagnosed at 11, after years of trying to nail it down. I am sure you are a wonderful mother, we all are, it's a given. xoxox Another newbie... Hello everyone.
