Guest guest
Hi Debbie with the e -- We did start Eli on cow's milk at one year, but he didn't have reflux or tube issues, I don't know if that changes things. Our doc did suggest using 2% milk rather than whole to keep his weight down. I stuck with whole milk until he was 2 (the fat is good for nerve development or something like that). Good luck! Love debbi mom to Logan (almost 6) Eli (DS) and Milo 3 1/
Guest guest
Hi Everyone, some must think I dropped off the face of the earth but I wanted to reply to a couple of posts here. Happy Birthday to all that have had them and welcome to the new members. I have been keeping VERY busy with this group... " London Down Syndrome Association " and the kids in general. Not been getting much sleep at night with three kids that STILL don't sleep thru and one who cries for literally hours at a time. > Re. walking -- That was our biggest hurdle. Same with us and now its talking.... is NON-verbal and it doesn't seem like he will ever talk OR communicate. We have been doing sign language for a LONG time and its just now that he seems to be picking it up when he should be starting to talk ( & only if I model it first). > more than crawling around New Years. It was a LLLLLLOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGG > SSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW process that I have to admit I found > extremely frustrating. I can soooo relate!!! > started really walking I was more relieved and impatient ( " It's about time " ) > than happy, which of course I felt guilty about. Ditto for me. > he's stubborn (wonder where > he gets that, hmmmmm), not wanting to do what you want him to do. He was > also perfectly happy crawling, never really missing out, so there was no YES, YES....I feel like you are writing for me!!! started walking at 24 months (21 corrected) but IMO he was ready to walk anywhere from 12-18 months. He just didn't want to. We did MEDEK with him and that helped alot but the therapists there admitted that they had never seen a child so hell bent on NOT doing what you were asking him to. He spent more time and effort trying NOT to do the exercises then it would have taken to just give in and do them. He was pulling up to stand at 10 months. wasn't walking really well until 2.5 years and that happened one week after we pulled him out of daycare. I agree with Judi in the fact that the prematurity has alot to do with things and he probably would have d one things sooner if he had been born later then 27 weeks. I don't think...I KNOW that the prematurity still has impact on both the twins to this day. > They have done most everything " later " than what is > the norm for kids w/DS. I've always chalked this up to > their extreme prematurity. I don't know if S & P do things later then the norm for ds...they seem to be doing GREAT IMO. I have heard of children with ds walking anywhere from 18 months to 4 years (that being pretty common)....then of course there are the rare ones that walk at 13 months. IMO would have been walking at a " normal " time (for a " normal " child) IF we had known about MEDEK sooner.....we didn't start until approx. 18 months because we didn't know about it until then. Did I tell you I actually met another mom who had a baby with ds at 27 weeks (gotta be pretty rare)...he was a singleton. The NICU must of been pretty shocked seeing as the last time they had any baby with ds that premature was in the 60's....then they had and 3 years later (to the day) this other baby. , mom to twins Nicala,aa & ,ds (3) and (1.5)
Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to this group and find everything I read very helpful. I'm a mom to 6yrs, Brittany , andra, and (DS), 5 and 1/2 months. Born at 32 weeks. Could you please tell me what MEDEK is? This is all so new to me and with having three I really don't have time to read many books. Thanks. anne
