Angel needs braces to correct the turning in that is occuring with her feet. the braces will stop just above her ankles. She can run very fast even with the turning in but it is progressing and causing her to fall more. My concerns are more with where it stems from. I worry that it may be coming from the hips turning. Need to get our physiotherapist to investigate it more. Guest guest Posted August 23, 2002 Report Share Posted August 23, 2002 Hi, What do you mean by turning in? My girls walk on the inside of their foot (the side where their big toe is). Hannah can get around better than and walks much more so she has thick calisus on the insides of her feet. I swear sometimes their ankles look like they will just pop in too by the way they walk! The physical therapist who sees them at school has never mentioned anything about it so I guess it's ok. I did ask a physical therapist about it at the DS clinic I took them to and she said not to worry about it unless it starts causing trouble with their hips. Well, Am I suppose to wai until it does damage their hips? Hmmmm.......don't know about that. Guest guest Posted August 23, 2002 Report Share Posted August 23, 2002 Hi Pam, Allie sometimes walks on the inside of her feet, turning the ankle bone under quite far. Seems to do it more when tired, after having a seizure and also when over stimulated. Allie also has low muscle tone. She needs orthotics to some point soon. Angel on the other hand turns her legs inward, the left being the worst one. Thus their thinking the ankle supports will keep the leg straight before they grows into a turned position. I know the PT thought it was from the hip and she thought the reg foot orthotics were all that was necessary along with watching how she is sitting all the time. the orthotist says she was on the right track but braces are needed. If you are concerned about the girls I would ask your GP to refer you to an orthotist for a review. Do you have med coverage for this? This year we tried sitting Brook down in a chair and having his feet on the floor and that worked a lot better than trying to do it up on a table. Brook really hates it when the plaster heats up to set and then he starts moving and trying to escape and that ruins the mold. His pediatric physical therapist who has known him since he was two does it with her assistant. Plus I help too of course and one year my DH came also. Once she did some cranial sacral work with him before she cast him and that seemed to help also. Guest guest Posted August 23, 2002 Report Share Posted August 23, 2002 Pam, That's why Brook wears orthotics, so that later he doesn't have problems with his hips, etc. His feet also turn in. My physical therapist says she can't understand why more physical therapists don't recommend orthotics for kids with DS. She thinks it is because they feel that the problems with their feet and alignment are part of DS. But the hip problems that people with DS get can be avoided. I really think we are doing the best thing for him by putting his orthotics on him everyday. Guest guest Posted August 24, 2002 Report Share Posted August 24, 2002 they can do orthotics without the plaster on the feet they have this wrap stuff they just get it a little wet, and they wrap around foot/lower leg just like an ace wrap---dont worry they put some TED hose on first, and then it dires in about one minute, and then they just cut and it falls right off, very quick proceedure for AFO's.
