need help finding effective ways to teach anger management

to our high functioning 3.5yo. He is at a point that he now knows when he is angry. the problem is how he is showing it...yelling, hitting, kicking, headbanging, etc. These are not episodes due to sid or autism but from things typical of a toddler. such as being told "no" and grasping that it means he doesnt get what he wants when he asks. He is not understanding that sometimes the answer is yes and other times "no". he is also beginning to do things in retaliation and deliberately but normal methods of punishment are not working. any ideas?? prgrams etc??? we are getting desparate ...thanks :)

Take the toddler outside to a driveway or cement area. Take a big bowl of ice. Let him throw the ice as hard as he can on the ground, trying to break the ice. If the ice doesn't break, have him stomp on it until it is in tiny pieces. Do it with him if you like, You'll both feel better!

Two things came to mind when I read your post. One is a therapy called ABA (applied behavior analysis). This therapy has been great for my child! If you can find a therapist who is well trained she/he can help with these problems. Another thing is food allergies. I have seen children's behavior change dramatically once they were taken off food that they were allergic to. This may not be the case with your child, but I think it could be worth pursuing. Is your very verbal yet? Sometimes being nonverbal or having a hard time expressing yourself causes self destructive behavior because of the frustration of not getting your points across. Hope this helps.
