Guest guest
I live in the Lake school district in Austin. Personally I could go on and on about the reasons why I would suggest you move to another state if you are wanting any decent program for your child. Texas is 50th in providing adequate special ed services. We are known to poor special ed services all throughout the country. My son also has autism and believe me, he is now homeschooling and it is not because I believe in it but because school was sooo bad. I don't mean to depress you but if my child was young like yours I would seriously consider moving either up near Princeton or to California where the good programs are. Also, I would suggest ABA home programming. Let me know if I can help. Sorry if I depressed you. ALso, you can't transfer to another school unless your district says they can't provided adequate services, which they won't do. So your only options are to move. Eanes is probably somewhat better but still not what you probably want. Guest guest
Dear , Thanks for the information. It does not sound promising. I am still trying to get used to the possibility that my son has AS. It is not easy to accept. I did see on the OASIS home page that there were allot of schools for kids with AS in California. I take it that is what you were referring to and not the public school system. My husband used to work in California and still has his medical license there. I have to say that we need to finish my sons assessment and see what level he is at for his age group. Are there AS kids that seem to function well without the special education interventions or if we supply them privately. I have read that AS kids would do well to be with normal kids around them since they don't respond well to kids who have tantrums and wild behavior. My son certainly prefers to be around quieter less aggressive children. How old is your son? You must be a very special woman to be able to home school a child. I have always been amazed by parents who have been able to do it successfully. Was your son not receiving the attention he needed or was the academic standard to low? How many years have you been doing it? At what age was your son diagnosed with AS? I am going to talk to a woman in town who has been doing assessments for the schools and private clients for years. Her name is Dale Rudin. Have you heard of her? I was told that she knows all the different public school programs in the area. My husband says that he has no desire to send our child to public school and have them supply the special ed. for our child. He thinks that we can pay for it our selves and send him to a small private school like the Jewish day school. Its so hard to know at this time where our child will be in a couple of years and how much outside help he is going to need with this disorder. I have read that it can vary greatly from person to person. How long have you lived in the Austin area? Do you know of any parent support groups in the Austin area for AS/HFA? What is ABA home programming? And one last question. Have you heard of RDI and Steve Gutstien? I hope I am not bombarding you with to many questions but I have not found any parents in the area with an AS child yet. Thank you for listening and answering me back. I hope you enjoyed your spring break. Thanks again, Irit Benavi Public school programs in Austin AISD for Asperger children > I live in Austin and my three and a half year old child has a > tentative dx for asperger syndrome. Guest guest
Irit, I would really like to keep in touch. My phone number is 263-9773. I would love to talk with you about all your concerns. I would not chose Dale Rudin for the assessment. I can refer you to a lot more that I feel are better and more trustworthy. We are leaving in the next hour for spring break so I hope you can wait and call me when we get back. I have so much to share with you. We will be back on March 25th. Guest guest
Beware California. Although they have great programs, they are totally going broke. Oakland ISD is about to lay off over 1000 teachers and many other districts are to follow.
