Guest guest Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 To all spouses, We waited about 4 weeks after the side effects started, not smart!! They first put my husband on effexor...upped his mgs every 10 days, they got up to 150mg and he wasn't happy at all. They changed it to Zoloft, he hated them, so then they gave him wellbutrin, that was worse, we figured a dosage of effexor has done the trick here, 37.5mg and 75mg together, the 150's were a bit to much. He still gets a bit irritable (nicely put) 2 days after his shot but it calms him a bit and he doesn't bark as loud anymore....The zoloft made him feel as if he had no feelings, the wellbutrin made him hate people all together, the effexor gives him a much better outlook without the feelings of not wanting to be around people, or being bothered at all. My husband's dr. told him to stop tx because after 3 weeks on tx the mood swings were HORRIBLE, along with a few other things!! The soonest they could get him in to see the shrink was next wed. If that's not soon enough, and sometimes I wonder, we might just go on the the Emergency Room. AAAHHHHHH!!!! I hate this... Guest guest Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Jody, Try and remember it isn't him, it's very difficult sometimes, believe me I truly understand. It's the meds, I used to think, Gawd, what have I done now, they get past this mean and moody time, my husband still experiences moods for 2 days after his shot, but it subsides, and then we get to do it all over again. The shrink will help bigtime, go with him and talk, the one we use only deals with Hep C patients, so he explained things from the get go with us. It does get better....I do know how hard it can be at times. Hang in there.....and vent as much as possible, even let the tears flow....it helps us cope too. Guest guest Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Don't be afraid to go to the ER with psychiatric problems. May be the best way to do it anyway. I spent a week in the hospital for psychiatric support last summer, and they give folks the chance to try meds under a very controlled situation, with constant monitoring. This is really helpful in finding a good med. Is your husband off the juice now? Guest guest Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 , I remember my doc saying interferon depletes the seratonin and that there are two kinds of anti-depressants. Zoloft, etc are not in the class of drugs that affects the seratonin.I dont really remember it (thx to being on intereron lol) but apparently zoloft, etc are more mood enhancers. I was prescribed lexapro and found it very helpful - and stayed on it after treatment when I relapsed. Hope you have found what you need. My husband and I are in the waiting period to see a Phychiatrist. Guest guest Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 I believe the question was if Zoloft is an SSRI. We all know Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. I take Wellbutrin because I need it, without tx. I am loading up on 5-htp before starting tx. We'll see if that helps any. Guest guest Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 Ann, Let me know how it goes for you? I really have seen some fairly good papers written about adding the 5-htp along with the SSRI. I know that when I'm not on treatment Prozac makes me feel dead, and the Lexapro I tried for a very short while was heading the same way. I wonder if the SSRIs don't work for some folks because they are light on the precursor (5-htp) or just light on seratonin, and don't have much for the drugs to work with.
