Was wondering if anyone in the group knows wether seizures could possibly be related to AS? I'm asking because my 13 yr old son used to have them years ago,(A very mild form). He only would have them during REM sleep and only 2 or 3 a year and they only lasted about 30 seconds. They were Grand Maul seizures. He had this for about 2 years from age 7 until 9. Then they went away and he was taken off the tegratol. He hasn't had one in about 4 or 5 years now. I just found it to be strange. The neurologist said he had a seizure disorder but didn't know about AS. His therapist said it may be possible that persons with AS get seizures but she didn't sound to certain. I haven't read anywhere that this is a possible symptom. It may not even have been related, but I am just curious. Does anyone here have a child with AS who has had or has seizures?

Hi ,

My 9 yr old son had peti-mal seizures starting when he was 1 yr and ending around age 2 1/2 yrs - 3 yrs. He had two EEG's and was never put on any meds. We were told by one Dr that this was not epilepsy and by another that it was.

Our son is not yet diagnosed but was tested for autism "or" retardation when he was 3 1/2 yrs old. Selpa did the testing through the school dist. They told me my son was gifted and didn't qualify for their program. I assumed this meant he was in no way autistic. Now, at age 9, the Dr's from UCLA are telling me that this didn't mean he's "not" autistic, it only meant he didn't qualify for their program (which would accept autistic and academically delayed). I just wish I knew earlier. He has now been in at least 7 schools with many different Teachers (as they always end up moving him from teacher to teacher). <sigh>

Hi ,

The first symptom my son Marty showed that something was wrong with him, was seizures, at about 2 years of age. Until that time he was a normal child in every way, talked, knew some of his numbers, and colors, sang little songs, like most 2 year olds do. We had no idea he was autistic then, but with the increased seizures and with the different types of anticonvulsants we tried, he changed, and over the years ceased to be normal anymore. Seems to me that there is a relationship, but am not sure what that means, just that both problems come from the brain I guess.

It has been a long road, he is 40 now, and calm and happy, not more aggressive violent behavior, or temper tantrums. He does have autistic behavior and plays with small objects with his hands all day long, from you guys I have learned this is probably "stimming." His seizures are down to only a few a month now, grand mal mostly. I don't anybody can give you an answer, as so little is actually known about the human brain. Perhaps with new discoveries more understanding will evolve, but for now we are in the dark ages pretty much I think.

Thanks Carolyn for your response. You are right! There are some things about the brain we just don't understand. I'm just glad he doesn't have them anymore, the past seizures havent seemed to affect him in any way. Thank God for that! Thanks for your story. Carolyn <charper777@...> wrote:

Hi Debbie. This has got to be so hard on the kids, doesn't it? So much they don't understand and wondering why all this has to be done. My heart really goes out to all of them. And to the parents also. All you guys on this site have become a second Family to me. debbiap@... wrote:

Well, my son (diagnosed with autism), has never had a seizure that I could see, but when he had an EEG done, his neurologist found seizure activity. He prescribed him Depakene (Valproic acid). He's been on this for nearly a year now, and so far, no seizures. I have been told that seizures and seizure activity is not uncommon for our AS kids. That's about as much as I can give though.
