Headstart is a government funded program that was started in 1965 as a summer program to get kids around 4 years old ready for elementary school. They discovered that kids who went through the program did so much better in school by getting that "head start", they made it a year round program. Somewhere along the way, they added HI HEADSTART today is now a preschool, and some are year round, some are not, some are part time, part day that is, and some full day. The one I worked in had a class come in the morning and one in the afternoon. They have all kinds of ways that people qualify and it is on a point system. They take in to consideration several things. If one has a child with disabilities, yet their income is too high, they could still qualify. There are several determining factors. They always try to fill their programs with at least 10% of those that have disabilities of some kind. We had several with disabilities. Hope this helps. in IL Quote
Guest guest Posted October 21, 2004 Report Posted October 21, 2004 Hi, I"m a Head STart mom. Have been for four years! My oldest son, now 8, went to Head Start and now I have two of my youngest children, now 3 and 4, going to the Early Head Start program (0-3 brand new last year, only in Florida) and regular Head Start! These are the most awesome programs and they have awesome teachers! I will be a Head STart mom again next school year as my 3 year old will move up after his fourth birthday. I love it and I volunteer in classrooms, I'm on Policy Council and running for Co-Chairperson and also when I was pregnant with my youngest son I volunteered in the main office of Head STart, so I also know a lot about it. I'm a very involved parent! Carissa Make every month Autism Awareness Month.
