You can find it in the bulk sections of co-ops or in Whole Foods. If she's looking for the white powder or liquid form, then we're talking further processing, but one brand in particular is Sweet Leaf, by Wisdom. There are plenty of brands out there but I wouldn't touch the following: Truvia, Purevia, or Stevia in the Raw (all of these are isolated and not coming from the whole leaf). * Yuccan - (I'm pretty sure she must mean Yuccan since " yakon " doesn't exist...that I know of). Unfortunately, that's not a sweetener easily available in the US (or at least in MN)...maybe in a specialty or ethnic grocery store._ * Xanthan Gum - Can get in most bulk sections in co-ops (or at least in the Twin Cities). Otherwise, the brand Bob's Red Mill carries it and could even be ordered online. * Kefir starter - Commercially available kefir starters are going to be freeze-dried. Fresh ones can be ordered online if they don't find someone in the area they're visiting. Actually, if you put them in touch w/ a WAPF Chapter Leader of that area, they MIGHT know of someone w/ some grains if not already have some themselves! If they want to pick up the freeze-dried variety, Yogourmet has a line of kefir grains that I usually see in the refrigerated section at the co-ops. Hope this gets her started! Guest guest
Thanks, Becca this is a lot of good info. Even tho I responded to you directly, I'm sending it back to the group picking up on your suggestion that others might have more to add, along with Diane's reminder about xylitol. Thanks again, ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Becca Griffith <becca.griffith@...> Date: Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 8:11 PM Subject: Re: inquiry about stevia, yakon, xanthan gum sources Hi ~~~ I don't have the most complete of answers to all of the items, but I'll start it off and others can fill in or change what I write... * Stevia - The BEST form of stevia is in the green powdered form because it's the least refined.
