Hey ...yes, that's my idea of the 'typical' (is there such a thing?) aspie. That's why I wonder sometimes....??? if beth's dx is absolutely correct....because she isn't like that.

she doesn't know. Not even the waitress to place an order at a restaurant. It's very challenging. Beth doesn't do the factual thing...that's why I sayshe's not like that polar express character at all. She's not in any sense"nerdy."MaraleeMost Aspies fit the idea of the nerdy kid, or the ( as a book title is called ) "quirky kid" with their rants about things that they like that no one cares about, their unusual studying and learning about things that interest them. These things could be something that no one else cares about that they get carried away with and they focus on to obsession. This is a very typical and most usual trait in everyone with Aspergers. That is not to say that someone who has that trait to obsess is Aspergers, but it might be correct ( and I say " might" ) to assume that those who do not have that trait, may not have Aspergers. I am not positive. I want to say that I am not as familiar with Girls with ASpergers as I am boys. Anyway, since my son was very small, he fit this more nerdy, off topic, wanting to talk about things others did not, obsessing about a thing that interested him, and that quirky and odd behavior. in IL :_)

Maralee,

It is soooo hard when kiddos have multiple dx's because one

disability can mask the symptoms of another... For instance, a little

girl who lives behind us has Cerebal Palsey. She also is autistic.

Now, for her, even if there hadn't been trauma at birth causing the

CP, she still would have been autistic. Yet, many of her autistic

traits are masked by her CP... ~wondering if I am making any sense

here~

Beth has BP, social anxiety, and Aspergers. With BP and social

anxiety, her Aspie traits may be " overidden " by her intense emotions

and anxieties. We can't say whether she would have had " typical

aspergers " if she didn't have these other comorbs, but chances are,

her anxiety and emotions tend to shorten her focus on any given

subject/interest or it morphs it into something else... Beth does

show the " nerdy characteristics " (in her own way), but hers focus

around her anxieties. She obsesses about relationships, what others

may be thinking, what she may or may not get to do, etc. She tries so

hard to delve so deeply into these things that it can drive her and

those around her a bit nuts at times, even though they are areas

where Aspies do not have much skill/ability. I would say that if she

didn't have the other two issues to deal with, she would probably be

more " typically nerdy " , but since she has the fears/emotions, her

obsessions tend to go another direction! Becky's did!!!

~hugs~
