We are lucky in the fact that my childrens school

have been very

supportive and implemented a lot of different

materials for him,

which are working really well. He actually loves

going to school now

which is truly something to be amazed at!!

As I said, I have done extensive research into

Aspergers I am hoping

to help people and on the same token am hoping to

glean a lot of

advice some please bare with my questions!!

All the best

Sharryn

Hi Sharryn, welcome to the group. I am

curious as what the school did differently for your son? Does he have a

specific math program and what are they doing for Language Arts? Is it a

specific program? My son was diagnosed at almost 10. He is now Home Schooled

and this year we are using SRA Specific Skill Series, which looks very

promising. We also use Touchmath along with other books. Just curious…

Thanks, Gail

Hi Gail,

For starters the school has implemented a lot of new visual material

for Jedd, rather than verbal 'demands and commands'. For example, we

have a playground rotation system where each week different grades

play in different areas. Jedd doesn't cope very well with the

weekly 'change', he can't even cope with other teachers teaching his

class..so the school deputy principal has gone around and taken

photos of each playground area and each member of staff with Jedd in

the photo as well.

Every morning Jedds folder, as he likes to call it, is presented to

him by his class teacher and together they go through it and discuss

the days events. This process eliminates a lot of stress and

anxieties that he would normally experience with any 'change' that

may occur at school. My husband and I are in the process of making a

similar folder for home.

Jedds maths has never been a real problem, however in saying that

the school is working out a way for him to understand some of it

better.

Our deputy principal, who is only new to the school this year, has

worked with special needs kids before and has introduced a fantastic

program into the school which they call Multi-Literature. Jedd is on

this program and is doing extremely well.

It is basically for children who are 'behind' in their reading and

comprehensive skills and involves a lot of visual learning. ie

learning from pictures rather than being read too. Jedds ability to

memorize visually is by far better than rote learning or any other

way of learning for that matter.

I hope this helps a bit
