And I will say again that our son, now 24, has been taking risperdal for

around 8 years now. He started because he could no longer control his

rage; he lacked the ability to take that extra second that it takes to

de-escalate himself. This is a kid who literally beat me down to the

floor and pinched blood bruises on my arms....all while saying he was

sorry and crying as much as I was. He could not stop himself. And

therapy didn't help at all, since (we believe) his problem was

neurochemical. So we went to risperdal. And for him, it was a Godsend;

he had zero side effects. Did he gain weight? He surely did! But a

diet with no fattening things (the food pyramid dealie) and lots of

exercise soon cured that. He's now a very in-shape, 6' tall man of 24,

with actual muscles and 2 years worth of gold medals from Special

Olympic Track & Field where he's a runner (100 meter, 200 meter, 4X100

relay).

At our house, we bless risperdal. Sometimes a med is the only thing

that works.

Last summer, Beth went through a hard time

emotionally…her boyfriend broke up with her, and she was questioning life

in general…she’s so aspie, so obsessive, that she has few interests

other than the one or two things she’s interested in. So when one (her

boyfriend) was taken away, she didn’t have much to look forward to day by

day. One night in July, the day my son moved to a house 3 houses away from us (yay!),

Beth, her friend, and I went to pick up pizza. Something set beth off and she

sat down on the sidewalk and wouldn’t get up. For an hour or more. We

ended up picking her up and putting her into the car by force. She opened the

car door five or six times to jump out, as I was driving down the road on the

way to the hospital. Her girlfriend (who is over six foot tall and huge) kept

hanging on to her so she couldn’t get out. We didn’t end up going

in (she was freaking out but was able to calm down when I told her we wouldn’t

go if she could get control of herself). But that was the scariest, strangest

experience I’ve had in a while. The really freaky thing is, once we got home,

she and her friend walked to her bedroom and were laughing again in a few

minutes.

THAT is the rapid bipolar speaking!!!!

And that is why I’m saying things

are going sooooo well in the last few months with the addition of trileptral.

Life is…dare I say it…almost “boring!” HALLELUJAH!!!! It’s

a blessing!

Re:

risperdal, antipsychotics

Thank you Maralee. Your situation sounds similar

to mine. We tried

Trileptal and that too made him worse. I think we

may have the right

combo right now though. He is taking Risperdal,

Prozac, and

Clonodine.... very small doses of each and is

doing well for once!

And I am very pleased with his behavior for the

most part. However, I

think we are having a huge manic week.

Annie, was Louie a fairly

calm kid before his teens? What I’m asking was he physically abusive or

did this come later? , 12,, takes Celexa and Seroquel. He has gained a

bunch of weight with the Seroquel but trying to begin an exercise program now. Thanks,

Gail
