I took my son to a pediatric nuerologist. They asked a bunch of

questions and then talked to Gavin and the dx was made.

Louie was diagnosed at 2.5 by a psychologist specializing in

developmentaldelays. He got his full diagnosis from a

psychologist/psychiatrist team specializing in autism when he was 12 or so.

I did the same and the same with the diagnosis. I wanted to add the schools use a place called Glenwood. We decided as a group in the IEP meeting a second opinion. When Glenwood came they met with me asked questions then they met with Devin then as she gathered her information she met back with me. I asked how was the diagnosis determined she said a variety of things, that made more sense to me than the doctor did. This person interacted with Devin, playing...she had puzzle pieces that were color coded, as they talked he had to ask for a certain piece. Also she allowed him to choose toys from a bag, naturally he had chosen the two action figures. She asked if she could play along and he said sure, gave her one of the action figures but "controlled" how they played, no it has to be this way...These are the things she was looking for, red flags...IM sure there are lots more things she did but these things she knew I would understand.

When you know there is something there yu can't put your finger on...and you know your child...no matter what people tell you, go with your instincts. I personally would take my child to a specialist anyday. A regular psychiatrist could miss the diagnosis or rather is not trained for aspergers, alot of times that happens. I took my son, just to satisfy myself the pediatric nuerologist specialized in this specific topic, he was refered to us on a hunch that his councelor had. She said, I am willing to bet you 99% he is Aspergers Syndrome, being already diagnoised from a psychiatrist and frowned upon this decision. The councelor was a childs therapist and turns out, she was right. The councelor said she couldnt tell me that is what he had because she wasn't a doctor but was very sure of herself and directed us "out of town" to this specialist, so far she hasnt steered us wrong. She told me because of where we live it's hard to get specialist, we needed to live in a bigger city where we could get more help. She knew it was going to be difficult and it has been, especially at school. Challenging for us at home as well. We are still learning...it's been learn as you go. Good Luck

My neurologist wouldn't give me a diagnosis. Just referred me to someone else.
