I have no advice for you , but look forward to the wealth of advice you will get from the members on this site. I will however, be thinking of you and hoping that you can figure it all out. Perhaps it would help to list what you are eating on a daily basis, a sample day to help others understand exactly what could be causing your symptoms? I hope you get the answers you need.

Question on health problems

Dear friends,I would like to ask about some health problems I currently have. I started mb about two years ago. I think I am doing mb quiteproperly, although one never really knows. Well, I have plenty mbbooks and know I really find tasty my brown rice. There is no problemfor me to eat miso soup with rice for breakfast, etc. Of course, Iconsume no dairy products, sugar or meat. I don't eat a lot of fruit,just one apple each two or three days... well, I really don't see anywrong I am doing with standard mb. Maybe the only thing I do sometimesis to drink dark coffee (without sugar), one or two cups per week, I'dsay. I started mb because I had a lot of health problems, and I have founda great relief in all of them. However, some of them come back withoutany apparent reason. Specifically:1. I am getting fatter. There is no problem with it yet. After my mbdiet I changed from being

really fat to being really thin. But now Ihave gained about 10% of weight without any apparent reason. There isno problem with it, because I am still far from being fat again, but Icannot understand how my rice + beans which made me so thin are nowmaking me fat again.2. I am very cold. I find relief in miso soup, but sometimes it islike the internal heat of my body is off. This can be objectivelymeasured with a thermometer. 3. I don't feel as energized as I was before with my mb diet. I feellazy, weak. 4. The pace of my intestines have also slowed. I am sorry to say thisbut the smelling of my depositions is not as nice as it was. I wasastonished about how much mb changed this smelling, from the usual oneto something which... well, 'good' is not exactly the right word... Isuppose those of you really in mb know what I am talking about. Knowthis smell have changed for worse. 5.

I cultivate mindfulness in every daylife quite seriously and I see very clearly how my attention switchesoff without apparent reason. All these problems (with some others)made me come to mb, after visiting many doctors without any success.They seemed to be hypothyroidism, but after many tests hypo wasdiscarded. Mb seemed to be a nice solution, but now it seems thatthere is something wrong which even my beloved brown rice is notsolving. Clearly, from a mb point of view they are symptoms of a veryyin condition. But I really don't see my diet to be yin. Where

thisyin come from?The only thing that has occurred to me is that maybe I am suffering asort of intoxication. I have an appointment to remove mercury amalgamsin my teeth, but I consider this as a blind (and expensive!) shoot.Maybe the only thing that can be done is acceptation of the fact thatmy health is bad and learn to live with it. Well, today I ate:

Breakfast: Soup made with onions, carrots, a little olive oil and

wakame plus a soup spoon of hatcho miso diluyed after with the soup.

To this I added plenty of kamut (normally I add plenty of brown rice,

kamut is exceptional).

Lunch: Brown rice with gomasio. A cup of coffee (without sugar or

milk). Coffee is an extra that normally I permit to myself twice per

week (but it would not be a problem to quit).

Dinner: Probably some chick peas cooked also with some kombu, onions

cabbage and carrots plus brown rice and some olive oil. Probably I

will add also some hatcho miso diluyed in hot water, to be drinked aside.

This is more or less my standard diet. Some days I take oat for

breakfast. Also lentilles (or azukis) with brown rice for lunch or

dinner. Often I also eat rice cookies. Some nights I add some fish

(for example, sardines). I would say 2/3 times per week. Then I add an

apple to compensate the extra yang.

I also eat some broccoli sometimes.

This sort of diet has worked nicely for around two years. When I felt

better I added some extras, like a rice cookie with amasake or tahini

with miso as a dessert, but when things worsens like now I tend to be

more strict.

Hey

I am far from an expert I will just tell you what I have heard. You may be in a

slump and

need to alter some things in your diet perhaps change the grains around, or add

different

combinations like half brown rice with half spelt berries or something like

that. Even 1/4

something else too. Verne Varona's Cancer fighting foods book (he later

admitted this

wasn't the best title idea) has some cool combos.

Another thing about gaining weight. You say you lost a LOT of weight, perhaps

you lost

too much and now your body is settling in to try and maintain what should be

your healthy

weight?

Many mainstream folk freak when their loved ones (who have cancer) start a macro

diet

and lose a ton of weight. They fear the cancer person is too thin and getting

worse and

will not be able to fight off the illness. Apparently what's really happening

is the body is

shedding the crap (that is the technical term, lol).

Your funk probably is also that you are eating the same thing all the time

When I was pregnant Lino told me to make sure to eat a different grain and stuff

each day

so that I made a child that wasn't boring. Apparently it worked. :)

Where do you live? What do you eat?

I am just getting back to macrobiotics after some time away but in

the interest of " brain storming " : I had often read that some people

do better with a small amount of meat. I don't eat it myself but

books do mention that some people require it. Just a thought. I

think a session with a counselor is a good idea.

I am also wondering. How are you cooking the brown rice and for how

long? Pressure cooker? How are you storing it between meals?

I have been practicing macrobiotics for over 20 years. My body has

gone through a lot of changes in that time. (Two years is nothing.)

In the beginning, there was a huge weight loss. Then, not changing a

thing, I gained some weight, until my body settled at the point it

was happy. It stayed there many years until I experienced a number

of other physical assaults.

During the first several years, there were periods of discharge when

I felt unwell or previous symptoms reappeared for short periods.

These were temporary conditions, but not pleasant.

The seasons of the year must be considered. It is very important to

vary your diet with the seasons and not go too far to one extreme or

the other. In the winter you need more warming grains like oats and

buckwheat, tamari, sea salt and baked foods. I highly recommend

Annemarie Colbin's book The Book of Whole Meals for suggestions.

After about two years, I got myself in real trouble one August. I

was diagnosed with viral meningitis. I had a very busy schedule and

had been eating too much yin food. Laying there, I realized this and

began adding sea salt to my tea and eating more cooked yang foods. I

recovered more quickly than those patients my doctor had put in the

hospital.

After a time, the strict healing diet is no longer appropriate and

you need to listen to the signals from your body to balance your diet

on a daily basis to fit your body's current requirements and your

activity and environment.

Your body can become too yin for many reasons. My body naturally

tends to be yin, so I must include more yang foods and practices to

remain really balanced. Yin is a state not only of food. Winter is

a yin time, which is why we need to balance it with yang foods and

activities.

Dear friends,

Thank you very much to all of you for your kind attention and answers.

I will follow many of your thoughtful advices, including having an

appointment with a mb counselor and adding more variety of grains to

my food.

Some of you have asked some specific questions. Sorry if I miss

something. Each time I participate in this group I feel overwhelmed by

the huge amount of advices and sympathy I get.

Hi to everybody.

I just want to wish you all a merry macrobiotic x-mas! Last year I was in Seattle visiting my friend, the macrobiotic doctor (treats all diseases with food). Now I am visiting him in Florida where he is starting a macrobiotic center in Largo/Clearwater. For me, being Norwegian, seeing all the x-mas decorations, the fake snowmen and such among palm trees and orange trees, along with having sunshine and warm weather, is a bit strange. But I do very much enjoy it here and will be staying until the end of February.

Sometimes, either he or will

give some great advice to some of the

issues you've posted about. They

both do macrobiotic analysis and

counseling, which really sounds like what

would be best for your questions right now.

As far as cultivating mindfulness, and watching

this through your meditation...of course it is

a valid point, and one that I, too, would not

take very lightly! But, I am not really one to

talk right now. I haven't meditated regularly

since the birth of my son ((who is now 2.5)

and went back to school this fall, only to fall

back into old habits like coffee! But, I am

trying to dwindle down to just a few cups

a week instead of every day...

Well, probably meditation could be defined as the habit of coming back

again and again to the reality of the present moment. The moments of

lack of mindfulness sometimes are longer that others, but it is never

late to come back.

Interestingly, macrobiotics and mindfulness can be very closely

related, since mb people practice mindfulness of chewing. Two or three

hours of this practice each day is a considerable amount of time that,

accumulated through the years, can be very fruitful. From the point of

view of cultivating mindfulness, it is as good to be aware of the

breath than to be aware of mastication.

understand how my rice + beans which made me so thin are nowmaking me fat

heat of my

body is off. This can be objectivelymeasured with a thermometer. 3. I don't feel

as

energized as I was before with my mb diet. I feellazy, weak. 4. The pace of my

intestines

have also slowed. I am sorry to say thisbut the smelling of my depositions is

not as nice as

it was. I wasastonished about how much mb changed this smelling, from the usual

oneto

something which... well, 'good' is not exactly the right word... Isuppose those

of you really

in mb know what I am talking about. Knowthis smell have changed for worse. 5. I

started again to have some cognitive problems. Not as strongas they were before

mb, but

they have started to be here again. Theyare most apparent in meditation. I

cultivate

mindfulness in every daylife quite seriously and I see very clearly how my

attention

switchesoff without apparent reason. This is difficult to explain but, if anyof

this, you will also know what I am talking about. 6. My sexual drive... mmm...

So I wonder what is happening. All these problems (with some others)made me come

to

mb, after visiting many doctors without any success.They seemed to be

hypothyroidism,

but after many tests hypo wasdiscarded. Mb seemed to be a nice solution, but now

it

seems thatthere is something wrong which even my beloved brown rice is

notsolving.

Clearly, from a mb point of view they are symptoms of a veryyin condition. But I

really

don't see my diet to be yin. Where thisyin come from?The only thing that has

occurred to

me is that maybe I am suffering asort of intoxication. I have an appointment to

remove

mercury amalgamsin my teeth, but I consider this as a blind (and expensive!)

shoot.Maybe

the only thing that can be done is acceptation of the fact thatmy health is bad

and learn to

live with it. However... well, it wouldbe nice to still have some good years
