help with an mouth appliance

My 12 year old just got an appliance in his mouth which is a precursor to

braces. It prevents him from sucking his fingers which probably not an ocd

issue is a big calming device for him. He only does it at home though. He is

about to go bonkers, trying to pry it out, it is rubbing his tongue and hurting.

I hate to give up and have it taken out, but he is miserable.

I plan to bite the bullet but can't tell you how miserable life at home is. Any

ideas to help him over the hump?

PS This boy has sensory issues, some aspergers issues. . . know that doesn't

help!
