Hi, I am hoping someone can answer this.

We took Austin back to see Dr. Jeff Bradstreet and Dr. Jerry Kartzinel a few

weeks ago. They put Austin of Taurine supplements. We talked about many

different issues and that was one that I did not focus on. I have emailed

them and am waiting for a reply, but my question is this:

I noticed my sons behavior spiraling downward. Thought maybe it was due to

the DMSA that we have started, but then yesterday while I was reviewing his

supplements I came across Taurine and decided to stop it. His behavior last

night and today has been great. I reviewed all the tests that we had

performed and not one mentioned a Taurine level.

Which test do you do to check that level?

Until I hear back from the DR's, I hope to get some answers from other

parents.

Thanks so much,

Jeri

My son takes the Taurine to help him sleep better. It calms him and helps

focus him. He did not test low but it has been a great help. B.

Jeri,

Do you have an Amino Acid panel that you have done on your son? I don't know

what lab Dr. Bradstreet uses, but if you have a Taurine level it would be on

an Amino Acids Profile/Essay. You should be able to find a " snap shot " of

his amino acid levels including taurine on any amino lab test you have.

My son's taurine level was low but still in the normal range. We did

recently start Taurine (looking to see if we could reduce his seizure

medication by the use of Taurine) we have not had any side effects. Some

other things to consider, how much Taurine are you giving? If I remember

correct Dr. B likes to recommend a lot of it. Did you start anything else?

Are you using a good quality Taurine supplement? Last, I will leave you with

the RDA for Taurine, 500-3000 per day which is a large variant. Remember,

Taurine effects the nervous system so to much to fast can make him feel

jittery.

Hi,

My daughter's taurine levels were reported on a urinary amino acid test. Woody

McGinnis says that most kids with autism have low taurine, but my daughter's

results indicated within range borderline high taurine. However, I read

somewhere on this list that Dr. Pangborn said that high urinary taurine might

indicate " taurine wasting " in other words, taurine that is actually low.

So many of you guys impress me with your in-depth knowledge of the science of

all this, does anybody ever experience the head-spinning that I feel from trying

to sort out so much complicated and intricate information?

While I can't answer the question about Taurine, I think this brings up a VERY IMPORTANT point!

It is CRITICAL to determine what your child is reacting adversely to. It may NOT be the DMSA, but rather one of the "support supplements". For this reason, it's a good idea NOT to try any new supplements within a few weeks of starting DMSA. Or to put it another way, start your supplements and WAIT!! I know that's hard to do, but you may conclude that the DSMA is causing problems and stop chelating, when in fact, it may have NOTHING to do with the DMSA.

I think it is very important to get a blood amino acid test. My

son's

urine amino acid test showed high taurine with most other amino acids

on the low end of the range. We purchased a custom amino acid

supplement that was based on the urine amino acid test and it did not

contain taurine because of the high urine taurine level. The

supplement worsened my son's behaviors.

My son's blood amino acid test showed no measurable taurine which I

had overlooked until Dr. El-Dahr pointed it out to me at the Orlando

conference. My son looks like he fits the pattern of " taurine

wasting " mentioned in the letter below and by Dr. Pangborn at one of

the DAN conferences. We have started supplementing taurine today and

are hoping to see improvements.

Anyone out there have consistantly high Alanine on their child's amino

acids? My daughter's urine and plasma taurine were always withing normal

range, but alanine on both urine/plasma have always been high . . . high

alanine being associated with Epstein-Barr and Chronic Fatigue. she has

" hypotonia "

Some people have elevated taurine and more isn't likely to be good for

them. Taurine is one of the sulfur amino acids and those can go any

which way.

I really don't know. But if he has problems with it, then don't give

it to him. Sometimes the body pushes something " out of range " for a

good reason and is healthier that way.

I may have it all mixed up but I believe that Taurine is very

important to sulfation... so yes, I had Ethan on some Taurine, and at

first seemed fine, but within a few days--flush skin, intense eyes,

intense behavior... I think it was just too much too fast. So I

intend to get him on it again, but in teeny tiny amounts and work up

from there. It is supposed to be good for vision, too.

Yes, my son is taking taurine and when we started it it stopped his

You can find a lot more...

Hope this is helpful for start.

The recent discussion was actually not about taurine... Well... indirectly... A

known company who sells this supplement, happened to fall in disgrace, because

they were using politically incorrect language. FDA took measures to " protect "

the people and asked the company to remove the language. or something like

that... That because FDA thinks people are too stupid. And they must protect

them from companies who do things like this.

Sondra,

I only made that one little note when I was doing my research(that people

shouldn't take taurine if there is an issue w/yeast). I am trying to find the

Taurine helps neutrophils do the chemistry they need to do to kill

yeast, so if anything it will help.

My son had hyperactivity and lots of irritability on taurine at

first, and so we quickly discontinued it! About a year later, a

urine amino acid test showed him to be quite deficient in taurine, so

I decided to try again with the supplement. This time I gave my son

a VERY tiny amount just before bedtime (so that he'd sleep off the

irritability...and believe it or not, that approach actually worked

for us.) (You wouldn't believe how little I put in the capsule that

first night! lol!) I didn't up the dosage for about two weeks, then

very gradually I increased the dosage...still only at bedtime...until

I was giving him two full capsules of taurine each night. After a

couple of months of giving it only at night, I decided to try some

taurine during the morning as well, and he didn't react to it then

either! Now I give him a taurine capsule three times a day, and

never see any negative reaction from it.

I'm not sure if this is accurate or not, but sometimes it seems that

kids react negatively to the supplements that they are most deficient

in. Has anyone else noticed this? It's almost as if their bodies

are craving it so badly that they just don't know what to do when

they get some. That's just my observation though, and may be

completely inaccurate!

Along a similiar line, the first thing my son usually does after a

cranial sacral therapy session is purposely bump his head into me, as

if he's trying to close back up the new feeling of openness and

freedom in his head because the feeling is so foreign to him.

This is somewhat true of my son too. Owens has mentioned a few times

that if a body is deficient in something, the body may finetune it's

chemistry so much in a search for tiny little bits of that substance that

when the body is bombarded with the substance, it overreacts. She describes

it much better that I do, but in essence, totally agrees with the above.

What are you hoping to 'fix' with the taurine? You want to have a

specific reason for giving any particular thing (therapy,

supplement, medicine) and not just do it because others seem to be

doing it, or it is the current fad.

Our daughter has SI issues. We have been working with a nutritionist

( Dorfman) to deal with primarily with anxiety and related

issues. This is the last supplement suggested, and now appears

to be a good time to try it, before our daughter goes back to school.
