The only thing that saved was the kid carts. I could strap him in tight enough that he couldn't wiggle out (they have the shoulder harness kind and even if he was screaming and grabbing he couldn't drop or run. He did manage to pee on the floor once though. Needless to say our local grocery store knows us well. I still won't try to take him for a complete shopping trip but if I'm feeling energetic we'll run in for a few things. One of the baggers has ds and the whole store is very supportive. This guy is great. I can only dream that will grow up to be that great. Karyn
Guest guest
Donna I can relate to the store situation. When was about 8 he decided he did not like to go to the grocery store. He was getting too big to ride in the back of the cart and yet I could not let him walk beside me because he would then just start running and running and running. I can't tell you how many times I had to chase him down aisles. The cereal aisle was his favorite and he would go up and down the aisle reading the boxes of cereal (front & back) to decide which one he would like. I would have to stand guard at one end and would stand guard at the other because once he picked out his cereal he would make a mad dash to exit the store. Then we reached the " Drop & Flop " activity inside and outside the front door of any store. Once inside he would pick an aisle to drop to the floor and lay there laughing and trying to pull you down with him. We then let him carry a basket with Ernie sitting inside and would only go in for 1 item (that he liked) and of course, he would break into a trot to his fav cereal. (He has every store memorized!!) Then we gradually introduced him to the 'CART' and my ankles have never been the same. I walk to the side and help direct him. Also - we increased the amount of items that he would purchase. Then I made him the " shopping list " which kept him busy!! Now (3 years later) he goes into the store, grabs a cart, walks down the aisles for his cereal, 2 gallons of milk, Macaroni & Cheese, Sunny D and then allows me to pick out a few items, heads to the checkout, waits in line, pushes the cart to the truck and hops in. (I have to work on him unloading the cart!!!LOLOL) It took lots of practice and tough times but we (HE) did it!!! My back thanks him for that!! LOLOL Thanks for sharing your story. . . you and Irma are good with your descriptive posts. Loriann - Our thoughts are with you! Charlyne and Pam - Make us proud!!! Hi All, I would rather go shopping at midnight than deal with Zeb and the store. I do take him sometimes, now have him put the animals in the cart and push. If someone comes within 5' he shouts excuse me. He does like to unload the cart because he likes to watch the items go down the belt. They can't ring us up fast enough. LOL Charlyne Mom to Zeb 9 DS/OCD ?
