Re: Orapred - is refrigeration req'd????

Uh-oh, the pharmicist told me that refrigeration for Orapred was optional and I

don't refrig. mine - does this make it lose its effectiveness? I have an

unopened bottle that came from the pharmacy not refrigerated. Should I

refrigerate it after opening? We have noticed a change in our son's response to

the drug (e.g. needing more than one dose to eliminate a fever cycle) so I'm

worried that it may be due to something as simple as lack of refrigeration???

Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

Orapred now comes in 15mg/5ml. That is what we use.

Also, it is MUCH better tasting, as least to Audrey.

She doesn't fight with us half as much as she did with

the generic. It is worth the extra money. The only

down side is that it requires refrigeration.

Hi Kathleen,

I've been told that it MUST be refrigerated by one

pharmicist and that it is optional by another - I

refrigerate to be safe. However, we often need to

give a second dose dispite this. I would love to know

what happens to it when it is not refrigerated.

Hi Again

Just went to the orapred.com site and checked out the info packet pdf file. It

states the medication must be refrigerated.

I went ahead and wrote to the company to get more information for all of you

questioning the info packet information and getting different advise from

pharmacists.

Will update as soon as I get more info.

We use Orapred for our son.

And for the first few years, I had no idea it had to be kept in the

refrigerator. It was not labeled on the bottle, the doctor did not

tell me to and the pharmacist did not tell me to. So I kept it in

the medicine cabinet.

Also it is interesting to note that one bottle lasted me over 2

years, so the expiration date had come and gone. And according to

several doctors, (including the infectious disease specialist we

saw), Orapred is effective for long after a year. If it looses any

effectiveness, it is very very minimal.

Anyway, despite being expired and not being refrigerated, my son's

fever always " vanished " within one hour of taking it.

I do keep it in the refrigerator now, but I don't feel uncomforable

about traveling with it and keeping it in a hotel room for a few

days while on vacation unrefrigerated. Then it goes back into the

fridge when we get home.

So in our experience not keeping it in the fridge did not change the

effectiveness of the Orapred.

Hope this helps. in Tampa, Mom to Jonah 5 years old.

FYI

We have used Orapred not for , but for many other things in all three of

our children and our doc has always said it does not have to be refrigerated but

it does taste alittle bit better if it is. I'm hoping to convince my

pediatrician after Ryleigh's next episode to listen to th ID Doc and that she

does have and to start using it for the episodes though.

Hope this helps, Mom to Ryleigh 3 in Nov.

As a Pharmacist I will tell you what I think.

We must keep Orapred under refrigeration to guarantee it will be stable

through the manufacturers expiration date. Especially since we may have the

bottle around for a year or more.

Often we dispense just small amounts--enough for 1 course of therapy. If

left unrefrigerated, it will not suddenly deteriorate and stop working--that

takes time to happen. So if it does stay unrefrigerated for a short time--it

should still be OK.

However--I always tell everyone to refrigerate it. I never know what

conditions patients will keep it. If I say it is ok to keep out for a day or

so---I

never know if that person happens to have it in a extremely hot car on a 100

degree day--which would not be ideal for any drug , let alone one that needs

refrigeration!
