Guest guest Posted October 12, 2004 Report Share Posted October 12, 2004 Hi My name is and my son Dominick (17 months) is in the preliminary stages of diagnosis for Pfapa. Unlike some of the other’s experiences, this route has been rather smooth. Dominick began experiencing fevers earlier this year, and in September, when I took him to the pediatrician, I mentioned that he gets these fevers nearly every month. The pediatrician had some concern of cyclical neutropenia, and had a blood test with a sed rate done. Neutrophils were fine (and had been on other blood tests which coincided with fevers), but the sed rate was slightly elevated. Based on that, she referred us to a pediatric rheumatologist, and my son cooperated quite well, coming down with his fever the day before our appointment with the specialist. This physician ruled out malignancy, cyclical neutropenia, chronic infection, and JRA. We are currently looking into the Periodic Fever Syndrome. Dominick is being tested for Chronic Igb, and there is some chance that it may be Famial Mediterranean fever (I’m Italian), but he doesn’t get diarrhea or rashes. The rheumatologist prescribed prednisone and he immediately responded to this, so we are leaning toward Pfapa. So far we are pleased with our care received, although I don’t want my son to have fevers monthly. I, too, wonder about source. No one in our family is in the military, although we frequently travel to Europe (Germany mostly, Austria, Italy, Spain and France on occasion). No malaria shots or other special vaccinations.
