I don't believe so, just qualify as developementally disbaled. I think the

SSI requirement for " disabled " is more subjective.

Yes, SSI is a income driven program. But for those families that fall

thought the cracks there is a new program(too much income to qual). You

would have to see your Regional Center worker to get info. It is called

Home and Community Based Services(HDBS) Waiver

& Garry, parents of (9), (8), JJ (6), (5), and

Esther (3). All adopted & with Down Syndrome.

Nevada has the waiver (In many states it is known as the " Beckett

Waiver " , named after Beckett who was forced to live a long time in

the hospital because medicaid would pay for in-hospital care, but not

" home-care " What a waste of taxpayer dollars!!!). Parents income is

counted, and a " co-pay " of a certain percent is due every month, then you

get a medicaid card. We wouldn't use even a small portion of what our

co-pay would be, so we arent' doing it. By the way, our experience in NV

was that we were told MANY times that we are " applying for Medicaid " and

" this is a welfare program " and " you are asking your neighbors to take on

this responsiblity " and other things like that. IT is a very humbling

process.

Ohio also has a waiver, last time I checked a " skilled level " of care was

needed-meaning something like a trach and g-tube. This was, however,

before Matt was diagnosed with Autism. I dont know if that diagnosis will

allow a more lenient reading of the rules. Different counties in Ohio

also have another program. In Hamilton County (Cincinnati Area) there was

a program called " Family Resources " . They took money and divided it up,

parent's income counted, but then you applied for funds for different

things such as respite, special diets, diapers, equipment, including

" disposables " , etc..... You applied every year, were approved for a year

at a time, then sent in income verification the following year. IF

circumstances changed, they would re-consider. Depending on income, your

" co-pay " at the time of purchase of service, varried from 5% to 50% ( I

think that was the top). I used to get Matt's diapers through them. I had

to get 3 months worth at a time (The only way they did diaper vouchers

was if you did 3 months at a time) and that was wonderful. NEVER running

out!

Every state and then jurisdictions in the state can vary. Wonder if anyone

knows if the State Departments of MH/MR will give out that info?? Sort of like

a search for IDEA at the state level.

I've been in Iowa 2 years and still can't figure anything out. I am pretty

sure parental income counts since we send in our measly work study pay

stubs each month, but all the kids are on medicaide. Jen was just

transfered to another fund when her SSI recently kicked in.

Nevada has the waiver (In many states it is known as the " Beckett

Waiver " , named after Beckett who was forced to live a long time in

the hospital because medicaid would pay for in-hospital care, but not

" home-care " What a waste of taxpayer dollars!!!). Parents income is

counted, and a " co-pay " of a certain percent is due every month, then you

get a medicaid card. We wouldn't use even a small portion of what our

co-pay would be, so we arent' doing it. By the way, our experience in NV

was that we were told MANY times that we are " applying for Medicaid " and

" this is a welfare program " and " you are asking your neighbors to take on

this responsiblity " and other things like that. IT is a very humbling

process.

Ohio also has a waiver, last time I checked a " skilled level " of care was

needed-meaning something like a trach and g-tube. This was, however,

before Matt was diagnosed with Autism. I dont know if that diagnosis will

allow a more lenient reading of the rules. Different counties in Ohio

also have another program. In Hamilton County (Cincinnati Area) there was

a program called " Family Resources " . They took money and divided it up,

parent's income counted, but then you applied for funds for different

things such as respite, special diets, diapers, equipment, including

" disposables " , etc..... You applied every year, were approved for a year

at a time, then sent in income verification the following year. IF

circumstances changed, they would re-consider. Depending on income, your

" co-pay " at the time of purchase of service, varried from 5% to 50% ( I

think that was the top). I used to get Matt's diapers through them. I had

to get 3 months worth at a time (The only way they did diaper vouchers

was if you did 3 months at a time) and that was wonderful. NEVER running

out!

Georgia has a deeming waiver program for certain dx's that ignores parental

income for qualification. Thus the term , the parents' income is " deemed

waived " for qualification. Of course, unless you know about it and ask for

it it is not volunteered. There are also tricks to completing the forms to

be sure some clerical worker doesn't reject it out of hand because a

question was answered improperly. Also, this is an annual renewal, with a

full blown reapplication with Doctor input every 3 years. In Georgia it is

handled through the county DFACS (Dept. of Family and Child Services) unit,

who administers the paperwork for the state medicaid office. Complicated and

time consuming process initially (renewals relatively easy) but well worth

it.
