Considering how they have screwed our children and their families; as well as your organization by not approving the bill that was originally written WITH funding for the environmental causes I will thank them and YOU Bob to not speak for my child any longer. You make me sick. You sold out our kids. I am sure your grandson will be fine though as you have the money to make him so. But until funding is provided for environmental research to include thimerasol then this bill won't do a damn thing to stop this epidemic. These professional politicians don't have a clue what autism is; but you, and your daughter do though and you let THEM tell YOU what would be in this bill. You can kiss my ASS you Benedict Arnold!!!! You are receiving this message because you are represented by a U.S. Senator who has played a critical role in advancing the Combating Autism Act, which was unanimously approved on Wednesday by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP Committee).

Why it is important to thank these Senators: These Senators and their staffers worked for many months to develop a bill that accommodates the priorities of the autism community and all the members of the Committee. This effort was very time-consuming, and demonstrates a real commitment to address the growing problem of autism spectrum disorders. In fact, it is unusual for this Committee to consider legislation that addresses a single condition or disease. It is important for these Senators to understand that their efforts are appreciated by the autism community. (Constituents of other Committee members are also being asked to thank their Senators.)

Background: The bill approved by the HELP Committee on Wednesday was the Chairman’s substitute for the text of the bill that was introduced in April 2005 by Senators Santorum and Dodd. After the committee meeting, "technical and conforming amendments" were made to the bill, some of which address concerns about ambiguous bill language that had been raised by autism groups.

Autism Speaks and numerous other autism organizations, including Cure Autism Now and the Autism Society of America, are committed to advancing this bill through the Senate and then the House of Representatives.

Why Autism Speaks supports the bill: The Combating Autism Act, as amended, includes almost all of the elements that had been proposed by a coalition of 19 autism organizations in November, including greater input from the autism community in developing research priorities, and a doubling of the amount available for autism research through the National Institutes of Health. The bill would authorize spending of nearly $1 billion over five years for autism research, surveillance and screening; increase agency accountability for autism research expenditures; and establish new Centers of Excellence in Environmental Health, which would be charged with conducting research “related to a broad array of environmental factors that may have a possible role in autism spectrum disorders.” It is expected that language in the committee report accompanying the bill, and statements made in the Congressional Record when the bill is considered on the Senate Floor, will convey congressional intent that vaccines and their preservatives should be considered such "environmental factors."

Next Steps: It is hoped that the bill will be taken up in the full Senate no later than early August. Then, the bill must be passed by the House of Representatives before being sent to the President for his signature.
