Guest guest Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Sometimes these public service announcements help to identify people to hit in the toe with a hammer. Sometimes not. Autism Speaks on Tivo Message I just noticed tonight on our Tivo messages at the bottom of the main menu there was a note about Autism Speaks. I selected it and you were able to view 3 of the public service announcements that they have been showing on TV - the Broadway star, professional baseball player, and car seat segments. Then there was information about warning signs for determining if your child has any developmental delays. Finally, there was a segment where Suzanne explained why they created those public service announcements. Just thought that if you have Tivo, you might want to check your messages to see if you have it too. Usually the messages on that menu are relating to new movies coming out or ads for a product like cars, etc. I was very surprised to see Autism Speaks there!Kerry Quote
Guest guest Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 It also helps those people that live under a rock to realize that we are dealing with HUGE numbers of childen with Autism. It also may help that parent that is sitting there wondering " What is going on with my little one? " to go try to find out. Guest guest Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 Well maybe it helps to think less myopically. How about this for a concept: 1. The PSA's serve a purpose for greater awareness which can lead to greater funding to ALL aspects of the cause and treatment of autism - which can maybe help all of us battling this disease. 2. Educating people what to look for. If these PSA's just help one family to recognize the signs and help with early detection and treatment- that’s a good thing in my eyes. Guest guest Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 Nonsense. It all ties into the desire to prop up sagging diagnostic rates. The mercury is out. The rates are dropping. Autism Speaks seeks to assist the CDC in generating additional cases. They are fine-combing the epidemic to add numbers. Guest guest Posted June 4, 2006 Report Posted June 4, 2006 Where are the rates dropping? Have you been to any schools lately? They can't handle the influx of autistic students. A friend of mine works for Early Intervention and he is not seeing a slowdown either. I love the PSAs and the awareness they bring. It helps ALL of us when the rest of the world knows about autism. From getting funding for school programs to research etc. , people are not going to support our children if they do not know they exist!!!!! > > Nonsense. Guest guest Posted June 4, 2006 Report Posted June 4, 2006 > Where are the rates dropping? Perhaps you missed the link? There's a good story concerning the drops on the list. Message#166390 Autism Declines As Vaccines Remove Mercury A new study shows that autism may be linked after all to the use of mercury in childhood vaccines, despite government's previous claims to the contrary. An article in the March 10, 2006, issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons shows that since mercury was removed from childhood vaccines, the alarming increase in reported rates of autism and other neurological disorders (NDs) in children not only stopped, but actually dropped sharply - by as much as 35 percent. Using the government's own databases, independent researchers analyzed reports of childhood NDs, including autism, before and after removal of mercury-based preservatives. Authors A. Geier, B.A. and Mark R. Geier, M.D., Ph.D. analyze data from the CDC's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and the California Department of Developmental Services (CDDS) in " Early Downward Trends in Neurodevelopmental Disorders Following Removal of Thimerosal- Containing Vaccines. " The numbers from California show that reported autism rates hit a high of 800 in May 2003. If that trend had continued, the reports would have skyrocketed to more than 1000 by the beginning of 2006. But in fact, the Geiers report that the number actually went down to only 620, a real decrease of 22 percent, and a decrease from the projections of 35 percent. Have you been to any schools > lately? Yes. >>>They can't handle the influx of autistic students. Awareness doesn't help plain stupidity. FEMA had New Orleans on all major networks and they still showed glaring incompetence. >>>A friend of mine works for Early Intervention and he is not seeing a slowdown either. That's a little general, but interesting antidotal report. Quote
Guest guest Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 I found it very interesting that when the Director of Special Ed in our county spoke at our support group a couple of months ago, she mentioned that the number of kids coming into the system with autism was down last year. She said that having NO idea about the whole thimerosal issue at all (she knows now!). At the same time, our school system is floundering trying to handle the children they now are serving. No doubt that they are overwhelmed by a disability that they were not (and still are not) prepared to deal with. But apparently, as they scramble to do the right thing, there are a ton of young children, but autism numbers are coming down. > > > > Nonsense. Guest guest Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 Autism speaks is doing PSAs to prop up sagging diagnostic rates - wow you figured out their main motive - its that - not raising awareness and funding ! I have an autistic son - I am convinced he was affected by mercury - we are doing chelation. I am convinced the truth will come out. That being said, anything that raises awareness and funding helps move the needle. Our interests are greater than any differences I don’t know why I am even responding to such a silly position Autism Speaks on Tivo Message> > > I just noticed tonight on our Tivo messages at the bottom of the main > menu there was a note about Autism Speaks.
