Bernie's hamstrings etc are also very tight. I asked his orthopedic surgeon

about the advisability of the surgery, and he said that if we lengthen them,

they will become weaker. And just get tight again.

Does it stop Sierra from standing or other activities?

I wanted to get my knees released but Dr. Sabharwal at UMDNJ said it wouldnt

make sense to do that bc I'm always in a sitting position. I sit in my chair

no longer than 5 hrs at a time and my PT use to swear that was the reason I

wasn't as contracted as her other 17 yr old sma 2 patient.

I forwarded this question to my sister-in-law. Here is her response:

>Hello, My daughter Jade SMA II, had what they called a heel cord release.

>They performed it under a general about 6 years ago when she was 4, as a

>outpatient.Took less than an hour. The Dr perforated her heel cord tendons

>with many little pokes through the skin to loosen the cord and then cast

>her feet up at a 90 degree angle for 2 months. He did not go in and cut the

>cord. I do not think completely cutting the tendon to release is a good

>idea. I mean then it would have no use, just a floppier foot. Just ask

>questions about how they do the surgery to find out. Jade's feet used to

>be very tender and I had a hard time fitting her into any shoes. They

>would hurt with the slightest bend or movement. After her casts where

>removed she had good flexing ability and little pain. To maintain the

>correction she was fitted for DAFO's foot orthotics, which are light

>plastic braces that she wears during the day to keep her foot at 90

>degrees. She wears her shoes over them and they also help protect her feet

>from getting bumped or banged on the playground. Her Dr. has never

>mentioned release for any other part of her body, she has severe

>contractures in her arms as well as her legs which we passively stretch.

>Is it Sierra's heels that the PT are talking about?. Well that's about

>all. I hope I could help. Good Luck, Theriault
