I have lived in Long Island, New York all of my life. I'm 53. I have always

hated winter, but made the best of it. I worked for 20 years and went to work

every day in the winter. My mom drove me. Unfortunately, I had to stop working

because of the progressive weakness and that's when I found myself staying in

a lot in the winter. I have found that if I didn't need to go out when it's

very cold, I wouldn't. I hardly go out on winter evenings. It seems more

difficult to move with heavy clothing and my muscles tighten. I can't control

the

motorized chair with gloves, so my hands freeze. It hardly seems worth going out

when I feel so miserable. In the summer, I'm out everyday. I usually go to the

beach club where my parents have a cabana.

Lori, I'm delighted about your move to Houston. Tell me about the benefits

for the disabled there. Everyone tells me that NY is the best for benefits. I

know people here who wouldn't move to Florida because they said benefits were

terrible there.

I'm glad things are working so well for you! I really wondered how it could

work well. I lived in Nowhere, NY with only my parents to depend on which

didn't help my situation. Thanks for telling us your story.

RE: was a cure? changed to north vs. south

Hi Lori,

Let's see, where do I start.....getting around isn't

an issue really, they have accessible buses here etc.,

and Steve (hubby) usually takes me where ever I have

to go. As far as snow, we live in the city so most

time the sidewalks are shovelled before we even get

downstairs to go out, and if it isn't, well, I drive

through it. I'm pretty much okay in the cold bundled

up as long as I'm not out there for too long, so I'm

able to control the chair. But there have been times

when my hands got so cold I couldn't use them, so in

the winter time, we don't go out for walks, just short

trips to the car and into the mall etc. Healthwise,

I'm fine, haven't even had the flu in years, my

strength hasn't deteriorated in about 4 years. We've

only been here 3 years though, the rest of the time

we've been down south.

Hi ,

Government benefits in Texas are pretty terrible. The SSI limits are

ridiculous and Medicaid here is pathetic (limit of 3 medications a month,

providers <pca> services are very limited often with long waiting list).

I have the same troubles with heavy clothing and not being able to drive my

chair when my hands are cold. It doesn't get too cold here in the winter

but summer is still my favorite time.
