Can you use one of those aluminium folding ramps? I used to use one on

our older van.

, I definitely know how you feel. Voc. Rehab. just isnt very 'helpfully'

as it should be here. I was told that they wouldn't even modify my van until I

graduated from college; which is a pain, considering I need to somehow get from

my house to school, which is an hour away.

Right now, I rely on my dad to drive me, but I would really like to be able to

do it myself. Has anyone found any other agency than Voc.Rehab. that would pay

for the conversions to be able to drive?

I know about the para-transit (I take it to work everyday....blah).

I would ask specifically " What date and time will the evaluator be here to

assess my van? " If you get no response, ask for his name and number and say

that you'll be happy to schedule it with him. I bet that will initiate some

action. I know it's a pain, but the squeaky wheel gets the oil...believe

me....it's true. Let us know what happens.

If they eventually deny your request for modifications,

appeal-appeal-appeal. They hate that and we probably agree just to shut you

up (I'm speaking from experience....at first N.Y. voc rehab thought I was to

disabled to become a viable employee and denied my request for

assistance....the ACLU helped me win my appeals).

I'm in college and have to take the handy bus to school, which is a real

pain

in the ass! Anyway, my question is, does anyone have ideas on how I can get

my van mods funded? I've talked w/ my vr counselor SEVERAL TIMES about them

funding a lift, door extensions, tie downs etc for my van, but the engineer

has

yet to come evaluate the situation. I need a lift SOON, its getting

difficult to carry me long distances because I weigh 63 lbs now! Right now

when I go

out I take my manual chair and it weighs 80lbs. It has to be picked up and

thrown in the back of the van, which is high off the ground. So it's hard

on my

mom, not a problem for my dad, and impossible for the nurses to do! It's

just very frustrating because a lift would give me so much more

independancy.

Suggestions?

Sincerely,

s, the Unique Princess.
