Do I need to use Vit. E T-50 in CP soap to prevent rancidity in the

I have never used Vit E in CP soap and my soap is usually still good in a

year.

No because soap is more of a chemical reaction. The only oils I have ever

had go bad in soap is soybean oil and this is one of the oils that I never

use.

Hi, Jane! You shouldn't have issues with rancidity if your soaps are

superfatted at under 7%. Once saponification is complete, there is little " oil "

left in the soap ... unless it's been superfatted heavily. Vitamin E is an

antioxidant and is NOT a preservative. It will not preserve oils but will delay

their oxidation and breakdown a bit.

I put tocopherols in all my soaps at trace because of their healing benefits. I

avoid rancidity by using all oils within 3 months and by not superfatting over

7% unless I use a superfatting oil with a very long shelf life, such as jojoba.

I think the best way to avoid rancidity is to use fresh oils and to not overly

superfat a soap. If you add fruits or vegetables, it might also help to add a

tiny bit of citric acid. HTH

You could use it as a antioxidant in the oils when you receive them from your

supplier to get a little longer shelf life on the oils if you think you need to

..

The best way to keep oils from going bad is keep them dark , cool and in

container that has little or no headspace (the distance from the neck of the

container to the top of your oil in that container). If you buy a gallon of oil

and use half transfer the oil to a half gallon container . Air kills oil.

Since T-50 is not a preservative it will not prevent your soap from going bad if

it has too high a percentage of unsaponified oil.

Hope that helps,

Mike Lawson
