Well, the reading tutor said she cannot test for dyslexia. In fact, they

don't even use that term anymore in the school system, because it really

has to be discerned by a neurologist since it's a brain disorder with

marked differences showing up in the brain of a dyslexic compared ot a

normal person's brain. However, she said has a severe learning

disability. She said he isn't reading at a second grade level *or* a

first grade level. She said he is just simply not a reader. He reads

choppy and he often guesses at words. He doesn't understand how the

sounds go together. For instance, he read " pant " for " pat " and " soon "

for " snow. " These were only one example she gave out of several. She

said he doesn't have a good sight vocabulary and that writing and spacing

may be an issue (of course, we already knew that). He recognizes

letters, but he just has trouble putting them together into words. She

said he doesn't understand the concept of how to read. He's not blending

and he just doesn't understand the concept of what's going on. She said

she had him read through color overlays and it seemed like he was able to

see the words better. When I asked at home about what they did,

he mentioned the color overlays and he said he was able to see the words

better with them. Apparently it has something to do with the speed at

which light is refracted back to the eyes. She said he has a symptom of

dyslexia which are inserting letters where they don't belong. And she

said she recognizes that he has a severe speech disorder.

She will work with him one-to-one 2x per week in 1 hour & 15 min.

sessions. Also, she'll send homework back with him that he'll need to do

daily for 20 minutes. She said he will definitely improve, but she

can't say whether or not he'll be at a 2nd grade reading level by

September. He'll most likely need special help next year. (sigh)
