Guest guest Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Hi Stacey, Just caught your post as I have not been reading much these days - my grandpa died last week and he was like a father to me so I have not been around much lately! Apologies..... But, yes - my son still takes Melatonin and he has tasken 6mg for around 4-5 years. Sometimes, if he is especially tired I only give him 3mg - but usually its 6mg and he sleeps well on that (so far!). A tip though - remember to dim the lights because melatonin only works when its dark! It makes the brain think its night time but if there are blaring lights on your son will not get tired!! Hope this helps, let me know. Love, xxxx Sleep issues..again! Hey need your input here!!! Hello all, if you're reading this you had mentioned on a previous post( a few months back) your son took Melatonin (6mg) I wanted to know if you still use it and if so how long? we used melatonin when my son was four or five I believe..anyway after a while it seemed to not work or took longer(can't remember which)Now that I think of it he was waking up at night.Well ,now after using clonidine for years 1 1/2 of (0.1mg tablets)recently it has taken hrs for him to fall asleep and when he does he wakes up a few hrs later.I can't recall if it was this group or not but was there someone out there using clonidine and melatonin? Anyways...I still had a bottle of Melatonin (1mg) tablets and gave him 2 tablet tonite.Shortly after he fell asleep. This was 2hrs after being given the clonidine so I'm not sure if it's the melatonin or the combination of the two.Oh,sounds like I'll be experimenting yet again!Any feedback from anyone is appreciated!!StaceySleepless in CA__________ NOD32 1.1454 (20060321) Information __________This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system.http://www.nod32.com has notified the sender that this message has been received. Guest guest Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Karac takes a half of .1 mg. Clonidine on Saturday nights when he spends the night with me, but he doesn't take anything at home any more, and he still sleeps. I think the Clonidine helped him to establish a sleeping pattern. He has his bath at 7:00 and puts on his pajamas. I give him the Clonidine around 7:30. I turn off the light at 8:00 and put in a movie. I close all the blinds and turn on the air conditioner and set it where it makes a low hum all night. He is usually asleep by 9:30. Oops, I'm sorry; I see you asked for 's input. Anyway, this is just what works for Karac. Pat K Quote
Guest guest Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Stacey: I have information about sleep problems in autism on my website http://travis-thompson.net Click on " common problems " and scroll down to Falling Asleep and Remaining Asleep. There is some discussion of melatonin there. --- Stacey <all4cam@...> wrote: > Hello all, > > if you're reading this you had mentioned on a > previous post( a > few months back) your son took Melatonin (6mg) I > wanted to know if you > still use it and if so how long? we used melatonin > when my son was four > or five I believe..anyway after a while it seemed to > not work or took > longer(can't remember which)Now that I think of it > he was waking up at > night.Well ,now after using clonidine for years 1 > 1/2 of (0.1mg > tablets)recently it has taken hrs for him to fall > asleep and when he > does he wakes up a few hrs later.I can't recall if > it was this group or > not but was there someone out there using clonidine > and melatonin? > Anyways...I still had a bottle of Melatonin (1mg) > tablets and gave him > 2 tablet tonite.Shortly after he fell asleep. This > was 2hrs after being > given the clonidine so I'm not sure if it's the > melatonin or the > combination of the two.Oh,sounds like I'll be > experimenting yet again! > > Any feedback from anyone is appreciated!! > > Stacey > Sleepless in CA > > __________________________________________________ Quote
Guest guest Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 What about upping the clonidine dose. My daughter is 10 and she takes the .1mg pills but she takes 3 1/2 a night and has been taking that dose for about 3 yrs now. it works pretty well. Occasionally she does wake up but its usually on those days she is so wound up. I would speak with your doctor, I dont know if I would give the 2 different medications at once. I have tried the melatonin befor but had no luck with it. Good luck and happy holidays~! > > Hello all, > > if you're reading this you had mentioned on a previous post ( a > few months back) your son took Melatonin (6mg) I wanted to know if you > still use it and if so how long? we used melatonin when my son was four > or five I believe..anyway after a while it seemed to not work or took > longer(can't remember which)Now that I think of it he was waking up at > night.Well ,now after using clonidine for years 1 1/2 of (0.1mg > tablets)recently it has taken hrs for him to fall asleep and when he > does he wakes up a few hrs later.I can't recall if it was this group or > not but was there someone out there using clonidine and melatonin? > Anyways...I still had a bottle of Melatonin (1mg) tablets and gave him > 2 tablet tonite.Shortly after he fell asleep. This was 2hrs after being > given the clonidine so I'm not sure if it's the melatonin or the > combination of the two.Oh,sounds like I'll be experimenting yet again! > > Any feedback from anyone is appreciated!! > > Stacey > Sleepless in CA > Quote
Guest guest Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 HI Stacey My son also has a problem sleeping, my sons 15 yrs old. He takes Remeron 30 mg , he takes it at 7pm and is asleep by 9pm and stays asleep all night. I'm sure they have smaller doses. I don't know how your son is, my son also takes Zyprexa for behaviors. Wonderful stuff, I get some sleep and night. Nothing like waking up in the middle of the night with your 14 yr old standing over you while you sleep. mother of Blake now 15 yrs.Stacey <all4cam@...> wrote: Hello all, if you're reading this you had mentioned on a previous post( a few months back) your son took Melatonin (6mg) I wanted to know if you still use it and if so how long? we used melatonin when my son was four or five I believe..anyway after a while it seemed to not work or took longer(can't remember which)Now that I think of it he was waking up at night.Well ,now after using clonidine for years 1 1/2 of (0.1mg tablets)recently it has taken hrs for him to fall asleep and when he does he wakes up a few hrs later.I can't recall if it was this group or not but was there someone out there using clonidine and melatonin? Guest guest Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Hey Pat!! You know it's always good hearing from you! ((SMILE!)) I would like everyone's input on this because we all learn from each other so much! I was curious thought as to what 's experience has been and if that was still working for her son.It seems like our kids go through different " cycles " with sleeping habits especially..at least that's been my experience with my son.I used to be able to put him down at 9p and know that he'd not be back up till 6 or 7am.(ahh..the good ol' days) I would just love to find the Key to sound uninterupted sleep for him..and me! Guest guest Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Yes,that sounds like a plan! Yeah,my son's been on clonidine for years and I think when I was trying out the melatonin with the clonidine that may have contributed to the sleep issues. He ended up taking a 4hr nap today and did the same the day before(which is so unusual)he was very aggitated today before he fell asleep too which is probably the reason why he was agitated 'cause he was tired.Soo...I will hope for a better nite tonite. Guest guest Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 With the smaller kids..like 4 or 5...what do you all use? He is just starting on respirdol (and I believe when he was at his dad's he didn't get the full dosages, as he came home acting like he did before he ever started the meds), and he's not sleepin to hot thru the night.. We have melatonin and benedryl and such...what have you all used that worked, and how much did you use? I will run any ideas by my bf here with us, who is an RN, to check safety of dosages for my son, but I'm interested in anything I can do to help him (and me) sleep through the night...
