Guest guest
HORMONE LAMP MAY BEAT DEPRESSION Ananova July 5, 2001 http://www.ananova.com/News/story/sm_345170.html An electric lamp which is claimed to cure depression has been invented by German psychiatrists. It uses magnetic fields to stimulate the brain into releasing 'happy hormones'. Its designers claim a short daily session under the lamp should be enough to cheer up depressives within two to four weeks. Volunteers who had no success with traditional treatments have been testing the lamp and between 30 and 40% have reported an improvement. Dr Padberg presented the device at the World Congress for Biological Psychiatry in Berlin saying it has no side effects and is easy to use. He added: " We have found that some cells in the front of the brain in depressed people do not work properly. " We stimulate those cells with electrical impulses. A magnetic field is built up around an electric coil for a fraction of a second -- it works just like a nerve cell and the brain gets a signal to start producing hormones which lift the mood.
